Dementia is not a natural part of ageing – We all forget a name or a face sometimes. Especially as we get older. But dementia is something different, memory problems are one of a number of symptoms that people with dementia may experience. Others include difficulties with planning, thinking things through, struggling to keep up with a conversation, and sometimes changes in mood or behaviour. Dementia is devastating, around 850,000 people are living with the disease in the UK and it is now the leading cause of death for both men and women in the UK. Yet just half (51%) of the public recognise that dementia can cause death. Despite this, we still do not fully understand what causes the disease, there is no cure, and it has been 16 years since any new drugs were licensed to treat the disease. The only way to tackle this condition is through research! Researching how best to support people living with dementia & their carers is just as important as research into the brain. Artists, Musicians, Writers and Communicators are all undertaking their own dementia research to improve the lives of people living with dementia.

We need more young-people and undergraduates to follow a path into a career in dementia research.

The Dementia Research Careers Festival is aligned to National Careers Week – Empowering positive change through careers education. Join us from the 1st to the 6th of March 2021, to discover why research is important and how skills from all areas can be applied to dementia research. Hear from researchers working in the field, and to get advice and support to take the next step to becoming a Dementia Researcher.
