Long Island community stunned by drowning deaths of 2 young girls

Holtsville residents are struggling to understand how the small children got out of their apartment and drowned in a pond. CBS News New York's Carolyn Gusoff reports.

It's really sad. Never leave children unattended. Teach them water saftey and swimming at your age (my local ymca offers free classes for 6 months plus). Mother was probably exhausted taking care of 2 kids, father couldn't take them with him due to schools.

We have to teach our children swimming lessons at a young age. So many drownings this summer.😢

Wow. Between me and my parents, we didn't let my children out of our sight when they were young. My Dad took my oldest to the mall when she was a teenager, and stayed there while she walked around with her friends. She had to check in with him every half hour, as he sat on a bench, read the newspaper and did a crossword puzzle. You can never be too careful.

Me and my husband had a divorce in 2018 and I moved to thins apartment complex with my 2 boys at like 10 at the time and they loved to play with their friends in other apartments and I would have never thought this would happen at this beautiful complex. Rest in peace 🕊️🙏

To all those people saying the mother is at fault - guess what, it could happen to anyone. However careful you are, there may be times when your attention gets diverted- we are humans, after all. But yes, with a huge water body outside, I would have personally put several checks and controls in place. But please - lets not judge a grieving mom. Its cruel.

I am convinced people these days are just not smart. Educated yes, common sense smart NO! They don’t watch their children as closely as they should. When you have two children this young you never take your eyes off them. Anything can happen in a split second. The father is currently in India trying to get back here, this so heart breaking 💔Condolences to the family for their tragic loss🤍🕊️🙏🏻Rest in peace sweet children, you were taken away so young😢

I am a mother of two (now grown up) but I remember not letting my children out of my sight even if it meant giving up on sleep, my own recreation, catching up on work or housework. I dreaded going to the beach because I knew I’d to run up and down with them till we got back home. Children have to be watched all the time whether or not the parent is busy. This is incredibly sad.

I remember from my childhood days that one day while my mother was sleeping I unlocked the door and ran for 5 minutes to the shop from where I bought my favourite story book and then ran back to my home finding the door opened and mom sleeping in her room. Only the blessings of our Creator and prayers for safety are our weapons that protect all of us.
