The first few lines of this song are missing and are important.  Released in 1989 while Nelson Mandela was still in prison Elijah says:

I come here for dr. king
Who gave the people a precious thing
He found a light in the darkest hour
And the strength for speaking truth to power

Then the prophet speaks to Nelson Mandela's spirit.  Mandela later became the great leader he was.  It seems like Elijah, aka Jackson Browne, knew what would become of Mandela and South Africa.  Freedom and justice.
