What do the Degrees of Curvature Mean? In consultation, patients are told of a degree of curvature, and a lot of times, they do not understand what this degree of curvature means. Scoliosis is an unnatural sideways spinal curvature which means the spine is bending from left to right or right to left. Also, scoliosis has a rotational 3D component or twist associated with that. You must have both things in order for it to be called scoliosis. The measurement refers to a cobb angle which needs to be 10 degrees or greater to be considered scoliosis.

A cobb angle is a measurement taken during an x-ray. It involves drawing intersecting lines from the topmost tilted vertebra to the bottommost tilted vertebra. Intersecting these lines will give you an angle, and you select the most tilted and measure this angle in degrees to determine the severity of scoliosis.

Severity levels are directly related to the size, and mild scoliosis would be between 10-25 degrees, moderate 25-40 degrees, severe 40+ degrees, and very severe would be 80+ degrees. The severity does not tell you the impact scoliosis has on a patient as a result of scoliosis. These categories are relative to surgical treatment, which is not considered an option until the scoliosis is at the severe stage.

Scoliosis is progressive and will likely worsen over time, especially if untreated or not treated proactively. The degree helps us determine how likely it is to progress. The bigger the curve is, the more likely it is to progress. As such, it would make sense to treat curves and keep them smaller. In traditional treatment, which is usually watching and waiting for the curve to progress, mild and moderate curves are often not treated until they become severe. Conservative treatment aims to reduce the curve with minimum impact on the human body; it would make sense to treat the smaller curves before they become severe.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we offer proactive, customized treatment plans to deal with curves of all sizes, with a natural approach to avoid invasive treatment like scoliosis surgery and spinal fusion to maintain the spinal function of the spine without rods and screws. The bigger the curve gets, the more likely it is to cause problems.

Hello! I have a question. I am an 18 year old female. My doctor kept telling me that I would be tall, but I guess that didn't happen. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 11, before I entered puberty. I am now 18 years old, 163 cm with a 50 degree curve. How much height will I gain after surgery? could I be between 165 and 166 cm? All of my family is tall except me.
