Premiering in 2018, the medical drama New Amsterdam has proven to be a hit for NBC. Based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, New Amsterdam is currently on its third season, but there's one cast member fans won't be seeing moving forward. In Season 3, Episode 7, it was revealed that Dr. Vijay Kapoor, head of the neurology department, resigned. And it turns out that the actor who plays him, Anupam Kher, requested to be written off of the show. But why? Here's the tragic reason Dr. Kapoor was written off New Amsterdam.

That is such a Kapoor thing to do. His Wife gets sick and he drops everything to be by her side. I respect that as much as I will miss him dearly on the show I completely understand his choice.
I hope his wife gets better and they are happy and healthy a lot more years to come.

This is sad news, but thank you for explaining the mystery. Incidentally, although he says his leaving is permanent, they didn't kill off the character, so technically, if he ever changes his mind, he can go back.

He was a keystone character for me. The entire cast is amazing and the crew of writers have hit every mark. Each season gets better and better. He will be missed but I wish his wife blessings and health and hopefully he will return even for a cameo.
