Overstimulation of the nervous system for negative emotions creates a coping mechanism through detachment. It’s a self defence mechanism that is completely normal. You don’t even have to be a frontline worker, you can be a busy mom who is exhausted with daily routines and caring for everyone. Tim his is why it has to go both ways and be reciprocated. When that doesn’t happen there is also resentfulness that can lead to nihilism.

I was thinking for months that I was a sociopath or something but I found out that I suffer from empathy fatigue just have a hard time having empathy for people because of all the trauma and terrible things that I've seen and heard people have done things that were done to me and others by people makes me have trouble feeling empathy for them
