Symposium #7 | Patriotism

Patriotism involves loving one’s country. Although many people find it natural, it is inconsistent with the view that morality involves impartiality. We start by discussing the cold war ideological dilemma between the individual and the collective, the dynamic of national identity, and several aspects of the debate between liberals and communitarians. We end by discussing Alasdair MacIntyre’s defence of patriotism as a virtue, and several views regarding the differences between patriotism and nationalism.

Preference to grapes doesn't mean I dislike raisins.

I tried to explain this as the reason why employers and charities tend to be skewed. People want to help their own people because they see themselves in them.

I stated on social media once that I have in group preference for my ethnicity, like every ethnicity does. Trouble is, I’m White, making me automatically a “White Supremacist” and a “Naz-i”. I almost lost my job over that as a public sector employee in Australia. Only White ethnic people are not allowed to practice in group preference or even express a desire to do so, yet we encourage others to do so under policies of multiculturalism.

Exactly, ingroup bias is normal, natural. Nobody complains when someone who's non-white does it...

Sure, but I also have grown to hate everyone else because of how they treat my group.

"In Group Bias Doesn't Mean You Hate Everyone Else"

This is something I was raised to believe was practically a self-evident truth, back during the 1990s when it seemed like America was as close to achieving true color-blindness (as in, literally nobody except a handful of losers gave a shit about race when interacting with other people) as it was probably ever going to get. Until the race-hustling Communists came out of the woodwork in DROVES and set all that progress back AND THEN SOME. I'm always going to despise the people who intentionally sabotaged our society just so they could keep their jobs of "fighting" against racism.

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention the two different sexes and different nationalities. Just because I have my preferences for those doesn't mean I hate anyone outside those groups, too. And the Communist hustlers ALSO came out to set progress back on how most people view and interact with these different groups. Self-hatred of one's own nation while having a pathological love for others is currently the highest I've ever seen it within my lifetime, and as for the relations between the sexes... just look at the modern dating market and workplace environments and compare them to how they were half a century ago (hell, even JUST two decades ago) and see how different it is now.

Loving real live people you know, warts and all, is much harder than loving idealized abstractions.

in group bias isnt racism or bigotry. its an instinctual reaction to those that are different as, in the past, this often meant danger. racism and bigotry come in when you start making value judgements based on immutable characteristics such as skin color, or ethnicity, or even religion.

Birds of a feather flock together. It's the natural order.

Great point! It's extremely normal to have these attachments. It's part of being human.

I believe this was a sentiment of Marilyn Manson in the 90s. The lyric was something like "Love everybody destroys the meaning of"
It was just plain obvious as recently as that, and now its controversial.

To provide some added input on the whole Christian part of the conversation here:

While one of the "Greatest Commandments" that Jesus used to condense all of the teachings of the Law and the Prophets as simply as possible _does_ say to *"love thy neighbor as thyself", * that one is merely the _second_ of those commandments; the first and foremost is to *"love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind", * so even from the Christian perspective, the whole globo-homo notion of "loving all humanity" is utter nonsense because it's _God_ first and then your _neighbors_ (which would presumably also include your family and other relatives).

Even in the Classical sense, the only time there's ever been a concept of an "impartial love" is with the concept of _"agape", _ an endless and all-encompassing love that is _completely_ separate from the other three types of love (familial, brotherly, and romantic); the _only_ being that's described as having "agape" is God Himself, and even then it's _still_ constantly conceptualized via the lens of God being the _Father_ of all things, which is rather prescient since the Fifth Commandment is the one that states *"Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."*

The kind of flawed logic that leads one to think that preferential love for one thing inherently implies a hatred of another thing is borne from the belief that everything is a zero-sum equation; that all [things] are in limited supply and in using/applying more of a [thing] in a [place] than in a [different place], that then insists that the [different place] must _lose_ some of the [thing] in order to grant more of the [thing] to the [place]. It's a belief that value (of any kind, be it money or love) simply cannot be created; it can only be moved from one place to another.

Many studies show that people are physically attracted to people that look like their parents. In race sexual preferences are normal too.

It's also fine to prefer your own race over others, and to help your own race and not others.

It does mean that black people prefer to work with other black people which is why they have difficulty see that all black teams, working groups etc are not diverse and perhaps racist. The dance group Diversity is an ironic example, or recently the all black cabin crew of an airline. It also explains why the seem to have to be able to see some one who looks like them in a job before they say that they are able to apply for one. It also explains why white liberal women are very likely to support groups in preference to their own.
