What is RetireJapan and what does it do?

After a serious allegation was made on Twitter, I want to explain clearly what RetireJapan does and does not do. It provides information, support, encouragement, a place to ask questions, get feedback, and participate in a friendly community.

It does not provide investing, financial, or tax advice, but it might be the best place to get information in English about personal finance, investing, retirement, and life in Japan.

I for one never doubted your direction and purpose. I found your site from author Andrew Hallam recommending your website a few years back. I've been following your blog trying to educate myself on personal finance in Japan. It really helps me to have it explained in English. Forever grateful for your help. PS: You're gonna continue to get trolls, unfortunately.

Dear Ben, Thank you for your efforts in creating the Retire Japan content, especially for explaining the NISA in plain English. It's valuable to have this information presented clearly and understandably.

Your help and dedication for a long time is much appreciated Ben. Knowing you personally from many years ago when I lived in Sendai, I also know that you are an honest and trustworthy person who has a genuine interest in helping people improve their situation while living in Japan. Wishing you all the best for many more years!

Thank you Retire Japan, I have a Financial Advisor in the UK, so I know what you do is clearly different ...and is totally BRILLIANT for figuring out life here in Japan - please continue to deliver such a useful information source and community discussion. Finding your sites has really made a huge difference to my comfort and confidence about retiring in Japan!!

Your advice has saved me from making serious errors and has enabled me to look forward to retirement rather than dread it, so carry on I say.

You were the inspiration for me to start using NISA 2-3 years ago. Thank you!

He seemed to take umbrage with your campain to democratize knowledge. Entire industries depend on American taxation being as confusing as possible.

Thanks for all you do Ben.

You’ve sure been a massive help to me. Thanks Ben.

I’m guess the guy tweeting about you was just trying to get some attention. Probably trying to generate some extra business for himself.

This is one of my favorite channels, and it is helping me wake up and start thinking about my future, about investing, about living in Japan again. I have great admiration for you because when you hit your numbers you started thinking about how you might help others. thank you!

As for Financial advisor license - have you considered obtaining one? I'd imagine it would make your life easier in a sense.

I have a question (many if you've noticed), if you have a mutual fund (for me I have a few of the major ones with SMBC) and it is set to reinvest any dividends, will the amount of your shares in the mutual fund increase when dividends are paid out?

So, if that isn't clear, if you own 1 full share of a fund worth 30, 000 yen (on SMBC each share is divided as 10, 000 parts, so my account page says 10, 000口 for each full share I own... everywhere?), and Apple, which is a part of the fund pays out their dividends, how do I see this payout? Would the 10, 000 suddenly become 10, 010口 or ???

If you think this might help others too, I hope you'll consider a video sometime. I have read through pages and pages and I can not find it spelled out when, how, where dividends end up.

What an absurd allegation. Coming from one of your consortiums I for one never felt that I was getting "investment advise" rather I was getting a zip file if you will of almost every aspect of finance in Japan. You and your team have also been so kind with helping people with how to setup brokerage accounts but NEVER investment advise. What an uneducated tweet from a twit.
