How Stress Affects Telomeres

Scientists have discovered that people who have been living in chronic stress may live shorter lives. According to the Genetic Theory of Aging, stress affects multiple systems in the body including the genetic process of aging.

Telomeres are regions of repetitive DNA sequences at the ends of chromosomes. They are designed to protect the ends of the chromosomes from fraying or tangling. With age, this process is natural, however for people with high stress, this process can begin prematurely.

Think of it like the ends of shoelaces - the telomere is designed similarly to the plastic end that protects the shoelace from fraying and breaking down.

So what causes stress and how can we stop this from happening? The biggest stress-causing factor is trauma - either “big T” trauma (single one-time horrific event) and “little t” trauma (growing up in a constant state of unease, unrest or fear).

Selenium prevents telomere damage. Plenty of other things will age you prematurely such as processed food, alcohol, poor air quality and being unfit.
