FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on a true 1972 story, Sidney Lumet's 1975 drama chronicles a unique bank robbery on a hot summer afternoon in New York City. Shortly before closing time, scheming loser Sonny (Al Pacino) and his slow-witted buddy, Sal (John Cazale), burst into a Brooklyn bank for what should be a run-of-the-mill robbery, but everything goes wrong, beginning with the fact that there is almost no money in the bank. The situation swiftly escalates, as Sonny and Sal take hostages; enough cops to police the tristate area surround the bank; a large Sonny-sympathetic crowd gathers to watch; the media arrive to complete the circus; and police captain Moretti (Charles Durning) tries to negotiate with Sonny while keeping the volatile spectacle under control. When Sonny's lover, Leon (Chris Sarandon), tries to talk Sonny out of the bank, we learn the robbery's motive: to finance Leon's sex-change operation. Sonny demands a plane to escape, but the end is near once menacingly cool FBI agent Sheldon (James Broderick) arrives to take over the negotiations.

Pacino looked more coked up in this movie than he did in scarface!

John Cazale, who played Sal in this movie and, of course, Fredo Corleone, was in only five films. All of them were nominated for or won the Oscar for best picture.

"Telephone call, its for you." That is one call you never want to hear in the middle of a bank job. Like your guts are leaving your body.

The woman who leaped joyfully at the news the cops had arrived was cast 30 years later in a Spike Lee bank heist film. [Actor Marcia Jean Kurtz...appearing as Miriam Douglas in BOTH "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975) and Inside Man (2006.)]

One big flaw with this scene is that if this was set in 1972 then every NYPD car there should've still retained the green/white color scheme as the blue /white scheme was not introduced until late-1973

One of many of the best scenes in this movie.  I saw this uncut on TV back in the day when I was a little Kensington Drake, I was too young to understand a lot of it but I was old enough to understand the oddity of him being married to a man (when Leon was in the barbershop talking about being trapped in a womans body, the cop that laughs deserved an Oscar).  The end seemed a little ho-hum, but when I watched it with my adult eyes, I could see how everything came crashing down in the end and how (with just his eyes and facial expressions) Sonny realized the error in his ways.  Kensington DRake.

H'm. We could wait for them to come out or we could call them while they are still inside the bank and alert them that we are here while they still have hostages? Tough choice.

John Cazale used to get to eat free at a Italian restaurant because they were Godfather fans. That is where he took Meryl on dates that is all could afford.

So many questions. How did the cop know the bank was being robbed? Why did he ask "what are you doing in there?" even though he knows the bank is being robbed. What did the cop say to the bank manager? Something like "put that jackass on the phone"?

I'm guessing at the time they filmed this movie they used an actual bank?

I was one of the hostages at the actual robbery that this film was based on. That's not true at all. But wasn't it fun thinking I was for a second?
