If they, AMD Marketing, communicated that these are not CPUs for Gaming, made their Tech Day more public, and widely brag about their power efficiency, shared how many drop in replacement and new corporate customers are getting, ... I think everyone* would have a totally different reaction. Instead of "Zen5 is slower than Zen4", we would be getting "Zen5 8 core can match Zen4 12 core at the same power levels." And if they clearly said something along the lines: "Gamers, we didn't forget you, 3D variant are coming, and you can expect similar increase in gaming workloads like in our previous generations." Zen 5 would be viewed as a big step forward without increasing power consumption.

*well except twitter "40%+ increase or nothing" weirdos

Some people need to stop being surprised every time huge multi billion dollar corporations act like huge multi billion dollar corporations.

AMD wants 50% market share in data centers. This is primary goal. Zen 5 X3D is going to solve the "gaming" problem.

Never trust marketing.... then you'll never be disappointed

Also, the power savings should make Zen 5 laptop chips faster at lower power...

More energy efficient processors is great and long overdue. Even for gaming. No air-conditioning here. 36c in-house. No way I could use a 150W+ processor and a 400W+ video card... I switched to AMD APUs since last year. No plan to go back to higher W stuff. I prefer to upgrade my APU based pc once necessary and possible. 😊

I really don’t see what the problem is.

For gaming, you’d be stupid not to buy the 5X00x3D or 7X00x3D.

For productivity, zen 5 isn’t bad with PBO2, and we haven’t seen the top productivity chip yet.

Buy the right tool for the task. Why be mad at gaming uplift when the part isn’t exactly a gaming centric product.

Zen 5 also makes a huge amount of sense for gaming handheld, if you can pull a 10% energy usage reduction while providing a 10% uplift at low wattage, you would be seeing current 15w performance at possibly as low as 12 Watts, on a 50wh battery that's 20 minutes extra run time at roughly same performance, more if a system like rog ally goes oled

AMD improved it's core resources beyond the point of diminishing returns, and improved the fetching a way that allows it to fetch two blocks either from two threads or from one. But instructions from a single thread can still block each other especially if some of them are waiting data from main memory. So this makes SMT far more effective as long as you don't hit the power limit, which could easily happen if you run lot's of threads and don't use the vector unit. But the if the code uses AVX-512 vector instructions then improvements also make running those more power efficient and a lot faster at given frequency. It's not necessarily that AMD concentrated on data center, but data center stuff is in the direction where improvements are easier to make because of more independent operations available within a certain power limit per core.
So improvements are very large in two directions AVX-512 and SMT integer execution, because those are easier to improve within a limited power envelope. There's a good single threaded improvement from same resources.

AVX512 performance is monstrous and power is down. It's excellent, for servers and workstations.

The moment i saw the phoronix article, i said to myself, these are mini Epyc CPUs and gamers just don't matter this gen except where x3d parts exist. This is their Nvidia strategy

Sooner people realise Corporations are not their friends, the better the world will be.

I have been saying for years that AMD is primarily Datacenter/server driven company, I don't really blame them since PC sales have been overall declining for years now. Lisa said from the beginning the first goal was to get back in to the datacenter. The desktop has always felt has felt like just capitalising on the work they did to make their server CPUs then just tweaked for home use, and laptop has always been behind desktop and server. I figure that is part of the reason laptop CPU naming scheme is so wierd, they really don't care but want to cover up. Their CPUs are just really efficient while staying powerful so that just happens to work really well for laptop.

Guess I'll be hanging on to my 3600 for a little while longer.

As a budget gamer that cares about not having to wire up a whole breaker on my panel to power my gaming PC, i see zen 5 as an absolute win. Zen 4 was fine, but the power requirements meant i had to do some very serious upgrades to my system just to prep for it. Zen 5 means i can keep everything in place when i am ready to swap everything out. And by then the price difference between it and Zen 4 will long be irrelevant.

Zen 5 is not a failure, your reporting is. Wendell from level 1 tech has completely different results because he did more comprehensive tests. You can also enable PBO and gain massive performance from lifting the power limits. Zen 5 has better 1% lows than Zen 4 at existing power level. Gamers should be waiting for the x3d chips regardless. Normal Zen 5 is a complete success in perf/watt, which is a major accomplishment. This chip should be in the next steam deck for sure, it will be a mobile console monopoly.

well it's much easier to cool, so it's bang on for a SFF build.

So Zen5 is not geared towards regular consumers, but rather will enable datacenters. Oh that's cool. I'll wait for the x3d variant when it's out though, cause I'm not going to tweak PBO whatever the CPU and RAM, I just want to plug it in and forget about it until 4 years later.

This shit is not going to change until manufacturing catches up with server demand for chips.
