2024 F1 USGP Qualifying and Sprint by Peter Windsor

A hectic day at the Circuit of Americas was characterised by another stunning pole lap for McLaren-Mercedes' Lando Norris and a decisive Sprint race win for Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen. Norris and Verstappen line up on the front row for Sunday's Grand Prix, ahead of the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz, who finished second in the Sprint, and Charles Leclerc (who finished P4 in the Sprint, behind Norris). It was a bad day for Mercedes, with Sir Lewis Hamilton failing to make it out of Q1 and George Russell crashing his car at high speed in the closing minutes of qualifying. In this video, Peter details the pole lap of Norris and analyses the key aspects of the Sprint race.

Unfortunately I have to spoil your thoughts about turn 19 Peter. Max said that he didn’t get a great entry to the corner, which meant he had to shift down to 5th. So he would have taken it in 6th as well. Still nothing can be taken away from the lap Norris put in. Great lap.

Max did a purple the first sector and Lando didn’t even match his first run. I reckon we know how it was going to end if Rus didn’t bin it.

I like the fact that circuits are different and that they suit different driving styles. It makes for a more interesting championship with different drivers given a better chance at different circuits. It also means that the team needs to select two drivers with slightly different styles to win the constructors. In my view, all of these variables allow for a more interesting season.

Interesting to see what the new wings directive will do with the McLaren on race day. In the sprint it was obvious they had tyre wear not seen much this season. On first glance you would think that it has hurt them. We’ll see on Sunday. Shaping up to be a great race.

I don't like sprints but to he honest, If I paid to be a spector at a track: I'd prefer to watch a sprint race to a free practice session
