Is this top secret US Air Force project real… or just a myth?
The Aurora SR-91 was supposedly developed to replace the aging and expensive SR-71 Blackbird which was the world's fastest and highest-flying aircraft ever created.
However, the Aurora is presumably even more capable than any other Air Force aircraft, including the Blackbird. The SR-91 is believed to be able to fly as high as 90,000 feet, the highest altitude attainable in the Earth's atmosphere; and fly at Mach 5, five times the speed of sound or 3,836 miles per hour.
It would appear though, that if it ever existed that this next-generation reconnaissance aircraft wasn’t mass-produced, likely due to the US military’s shift from spy planes to reconnaissance satellites, which can do the same job only more efficiently and safer…
The US Air Force refuses to confirm whether the SR-91 even exists, let alone whether the program was canceled, but that doesn’t mean the Aurora’s capabilities won’t still be seen in future US hypersonic aircraft.
