Phoebe, I just discovered you and your channel. It’s always such a wonderful surprise to find another female woodworker! I’m a new subscriber (from California.)

Your comment about the packaging made you a friend.

Loved this demo. I'm just doing some background research as I'm looking into getting an ironbark deck laid & want to know some of the issues that might lie ahead. I figured I could trust the word of a Phoebe! Now I've gone down a YouTube rabbit hole of woodworking videos & wishing I had my own workshop...

Great comparison, and in very hard wood no less. Thanks.

I'm very impressed you can grab and clean that smoking hot drill bit with bare fingers. I always get a blister.

I still like the old style. I find very often, having the bit attached, it goes through the other side of my work piece, when I don't want it to.

I enjoyed the video, but like Greg below I am concerned about the lack of depth in using these countersinks drill bits. Is there another way of using them?

Almost every time I drill Aussie hardwoods I find it necessary to "pick" the drill, IE in & out several times to allow the flutes to clear, or more often to burn your fingers clearing the drill. If you get it wrong or try to hurry you risk a broken drill welded in place & it's bloody hard to get it out. This may not apply with decking timber thickness material. The other problem I don't think you cover is: can you adjust for different hole depths, often with cheaper designs at least te clamp screw bears on a flute edge?

What is the approximate HRC of hard timber?

You are an expert woodworker but it kind of concerns me that you have lost a number of fingers. Do all expert woodworkers lose their digits ?

Why not just impact the screw down a little bit more after you predrill, no need to countersink

That’s a lot of edits on the intro, but fantastic content if you can get through it

Good side by side comparison 👍
Just out of curiosity, is the Irwin new or used?

You would never use these on decking, you use something like a smartbit because you cant over drill the depth, these countersinks with no depth stop are useless for decking, even the non tungsten tipped smartbit will give you more than 2000 holes in spotted gum before it starts to get blunt.
