I love all the cries of "hand" and "wrist". Why it's like guards were designed for a reason and reverse grip puts the guard in a position where it's less useable, as well as reducing your reach.

I think ppl are obsessed with reverse grip not just because of anime but because of how ppl use tonfa not realizing the grip angle is 90 degrees off. They are trying to claim you can guard a side attack at certain angles but if someone's actually trying to kill you the pressure and force against a sword in a reverse grip with just go flipping out of your hand.

I think what the obsession is people see one of two things. 1. The EXTREMELY niche use of a reversed grip for something that is one in a million and not great to start with. Or 2. Old pictures of people using rondel daggers in that reversed grip which was an artifact of how they are used (stabbing close range) and the clothing that was worn at the time (thick and layered cloth) which meant that you needed to use that dagger in that way specifically.

The only reasonable reverse grip could work for daggers or knives, i guess? The short blade and the light weight are good things for that.

You are just using it wrong. When a fight starts, you bend your knees, get a low center of gravity, grab your sword in reverse grip and then, when your Opponent is rolling on the floor laughing, you have enough time to pull out your gun and shoot them. Works every time.

With daggers I understand due to the close quarters combat but with swords it’s just plain stupid

That reverse grip shite is something my dad taught me as "good for defense" when we were taught how to use a blade in general (dont get me wrong he meant well but his training was more about safety than actually winning the fight) I very quickly learned that was not the case when me and my brother started whacking each other with sticks without adult supervision. I'll still put it into a reverse grip if I decide to fuck around with my buddy and just randomly "stab" him so he can leave work early but on the whole I'm glad I never got stuck in that fighting style
