M1 means make one and it's the easiest increase in knitting. You simply lift a strand between two stitches back to the needle and knit it. It will create a beautiful eyelet. If you don't want that, you have to either knit the loop twisted (through back loop) or pick it up twisted in the first place. The result with be either M1L - make one left - or M1R - make one right. These are directional increases and can be used to increase a project evenly on both sides

I find these tutorials have truly been the most helpful. I will chant the steps so I create the stitches uniformly.

So if you do an m1 not learning either left or right, like the first one you did in the demonstration, you make an eyelet? So if you don't want an eyelet you should do m1L or m1R so as to not create an opening? Thank you for a wonderful video.

Another perfect video, And Very useful. Thank you, Norman. Would you please teach us how to shape perfect neckline on a raglan sweater? I mean those short rows with wraps And turns. And how to work it neatly in brioch? This needs a real master, like you... ❤️

Hi Norman, thank you for another fantastic video. ❤ I have a question to ask you. M1 and M1L work perfectly all the time. But, sometimes I have problems with M1R. I know that you enter the strand between the needles from back to front, put it on the left needle and knit in the regular way. When I start with say 12 stitches and do my M1R after the 4th stitch in every knit row, I get a right leaning increase. But, if I knit until there are only 4 stitches left and then do my M1R, I get a left leaning increase. What am I doing wrong? 😢
