Don't Make Boring Wood Coasters - Try this instead!

If you’re going to make wood coasters, don’t waste time on something boring. These coasters are plaid! It’s pretty crazy that you can make an insane pattern like this completely out of lumber and scrap wood. If you are looking for a fun woodworking project, either for yourself or something to sell, try to make these end grain wood coasters!

Loving your builds and content. Thanks for being human and showing your mistakes because as always behind the scenes EVERYONE makes mistakes! Also love that rare display stand!

Excellent work!!!

I have been in this business over 40 yrs and never made a coaster either, trivets yes, but never an end-grain coaster. Why? Have your client drop one onto a hard floor and see how it goes.
However, this has given me a great idea. I have begun to dabble in wooden boats and now have a lot of fiberglass scraps. So I can see some of these on the radar finally. Thanks

The stand is stunning. Will have to try me some plaid!

I love these. Just out of curiosity, did you try taking the corner cut-offs and glue them to each to make more coasters? Depending on how you rotated the pieces and glued them up, you could come up with some pretty cool designs.

I like the stand for the coasters. Super good idea to present the coaster. And I also know where you got the idea for the pattern… your shirt 🤪🤪🤪

Billy, you certainly know how to make the process look easy. The finished product looks great and I can see lot's of Scottish people wanting these coasters 😊.
I will be putting your video's to good use in the next couple of weeks as I have a cutting board to make for a wedding present, it's for our best friends son and to be wife. I've only just completed building my very first workshop and honestly I have zero woodworking experience. Hence why I will be putting your video's to good use and maybe even stealing an idea or three from you. Hopefully I'm able to make good on your video's and actually make something nice for them both. Actual size I'm thinking of going with is around 18inch by 30inch and 2inch thick. Nodoubt I'm going to be needing a fair bit of wood to do it justice ( including my many mistakes to come) 😅😢😂😊. As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Am I the only one in the comments screaming at the computer saying "glue those cut offs together to make more coasters!"?

I feel obligated to make a Spaceballs reference and say the "you went Plaid!" 😂

They turned out great

That's a ton of work. Wondering what I'd have to sell these for to justify the time and materials...

Purchased these plans.

Are the “plans” explained for making 1 coaster?

I bought your plans. I followed the instructions to the tea. My squares are 6" x 7". Not sure what went wrong.

Where do you get your sponge brushes from? Everything I’ve purchased off Amazon has been basically garbage… I haven’t found a sponge brush that applies finish nicely that’s not overly expensive. All me cheap but I can’t bring myself to buy expensive sponges when I’m going to throw them away. It really adds up when applying multiple coats.

BTW, these coasters are so damn nice! What did you do with the first batch?

9:40 I think it is a mistake using a water based finish. I find these finishes make the wood dull and milky looking. A coat of linseed oil and then the oil based wipe on poly would make a big difference on something like this!
