Old trick, always install the CPU and Ram before you put the board into the case, your life will be much easier and you have less chance of buckling anything if the ram slots are tight which being new they should be.

Putting in a CPU and heat-sink has gotten really easy. I can still remember the heart-stopping crunching sound, the last time I put together a PC! What a relief to discover that it actually worked okay!

I remember those mouse and keyboard ports. surprised you can still find ps2 equipment. really enjoy long videosn

i would recommend fitting the heatsync outside the case as you have to make sure each peg has latched i had some systems where they locked in the top ones in but not the bottom ones

in case nobody else has mentioned it, the mouse doesn't work at all in the bios. This is to allow for systems without a mouse, ie not a pc but a control system or perhaps a server of some kind.

I think you did a perfect job putting together the computer I have assembled many in my day and you do it just like you did you do not need any static straps or any other BS there is no magic to putting it together

John,
Thank you so much for this, this long weekend over here in New Zealand, I'm finally going to assemble a new computer that runs Windows 10, I've had the bits for ages but wasn't keen on actually building the thing.
I am enthused that you can turn half this shit off that W10 is packed with, upon install, I would have preferred W7.
Good stuff.

At my work, we did use a windows 10 laptop (with custom made software on it) from a customer for some work. And guess what.... on a certain day, (you can guess it) the world famous "Blue Screen Of Death".
So, no difference with older versions.

The reason it says fan on the underside of the HDD or in this case, SSD caddy is for hard drive / solid state drive cooling.

I work as an IT Technician for a company that provides a managed IT service to various schools across London, Northamptonshire and the South East.

I recently took a PC in a school apart to find the hard drive had it's own fan connected on the underside of the caddy, which was surprising as it was a very old machine (early 2000's), it was also the very first time i'd ever seen it.

Another informative, entertaining video, well done JW. (Right Click Taskbar/ Cortana/Hidden). Run through the 'Privacy' heading in 'Settings'. Change the power scheme to 'High Performance'.(If you 'Right Click' the start menu, you can access the old control Panel) . After the 'Anniversary' update, re-check your privacy/Default apps settings.
P.S. I have a message to you from the other side of the planet, it reads, "More Elevators, More Elevators, More Elevators".

i would also recommend using windows 10 pro as you can defer upgrades, ,
it puts you on business branch so people who use windows 10 Home get to beta test the "new Features" upgrades before Pro users who have ticked the defer upgrade box(norm about 3-6 months so when they find a stable less bug prone version they push it out to customers who have defer upgrades ticked) or you can use LTSB version which only gets updates (but have to do it Patch to activate it, as MS don't let you buy LTSB for individual use)

33:00 there's actually no loss, it's just to do with how Windows does the math. Windows uses the original counting system where kB = 1024 B, but drive manufactures and other operating systems (Linux, MacOS) use the SI system, where kB = 1000 B.

I can almost hear the mainboard power wires touching the fan blades, just by looking at the construction.

I always prefer a-sus rather than a-sewse.. not quite sure what the manufacturer calls it

I would strongly get a proper power supply because the power supply in that case is proper sketchy. Power supplies like that are likely to fail and can often kill other components along with them. Anything from a known brand (ex. Corsair, EVGA, Antec) should be fine. I would personally recommend the EVGA 430 watt 80+ power supply because they are cheap and fairly solid units.

Do you ever play the organ thats to the left of your work area?

Smaller 4 pin connector on the ATX power supply output cable is relic from when computers had floppy drives. I wouldn't trust that power supply it came with, usually good power supplies are double the cost of the case.

The PC hardware has not so much to do with the operating system. Sure, certain parts will be 'qualified' specially for Windows 10, but for the regular human eye all the parts are the same in every PC, and any operating system can be put onto it (as long as the cpu architecture matches at least).
