What's your favorite term for "location-based mnemonics"?

one benefit of saying "in the first place... in the second place" is audience members could follow along and memorize the speech in their own palace as they listened.

Memory palace has always been the name to me, I didn’t even understand why people would NOT like it ! I never considered anything else.
From the very first time I heard it, it has fuelled my imagination and excitement.
There is something mysterious to it, that makes me proud of knowing about its existence in the first place.
How it works is , when you unravel the mystery, you see that it is not beyond your capability to actually use and understand it ( ….ongoing process, by the way), which makes you feel quite pleased with yourself. And it makes you burst with a longing to tell someone else about it.
The term makes other people wonder what on earth you mean when you mention it, and they wanna know. And off you go …… the way to sharing the mystery is wide open. The name itself creates a loop of positive experiences, at least in my humble opinion.

This gave me the idea to switch to doing my mind palaces in papers that I may change the order instead of notebook. Thanks

I use the term memory Palace. I've already noticed benefits from my current memorization project (metabolism). From conversation to putting ideas into practice, it's really exciting 😊

Well, after describing mine to a colleague he commented that it sounded more like a 'Den of Iniquity' than a 'Memory Palace'.

I like the term memory palace as well, "Never tried to re-invent the wheel, just add to it." I really, really need to apply this memory technique to my life, but starting it is where I am having a problem. I get confused with how to arrange the questions on exams from different subjects to which room(s) or item(s) in on. So, I just stop or give up on myself. And believe me I know this is VERY important to my life.

Great video series. I am new at using such techniques to aid my memory and find the palace method works best. My only problem so far is coming up with suitable palaces, but I am sure in time, I'll get better at identifying or imagining them.

'Palace' is a nice word. alltough I do get the 'castle' idea. A strong safe place were the memories wont fall out, in that spirit one might create the maximum security memory prison, with solitary confinement for all those thoughts and ideas that want to get away. I know very little about this just yet, I think palace is general enough that it will work in any situation. perhaps second place might be something like a mind library.

The term apartments with compartments chose me because it is so catchy, but I like to think of it in terms of a Downton Abbey type palace with apartments full of libraries of books!

I do like the term Mind Palace, but so far my memory places are my personal house, which is scarcely palatial, a dog walk around the foot of the mountain I do most days, and a chapel. There's also the house of memor from Kevin Vosts books, which got me started. I'm thinking of adding the graveyard up the road that most of my family are buried in. No palaces yet for me, I'm not practiced enough to be palatial. So, I like Method of Loci, because that's how I first heard of it from mu Dad when I was a kid (though I'm only just learning it now at fifty.)

I was surprised when you were referring to location-based mnemonic systems (commonly called Memory Palaces) as Mind Palaces! This was a discussion we had a few years back. I preferred to us 'mind palace' as such systems are more about using the mind than the memory itself.

However, even the idea of 'palace' might be considered as problematic, since 'palaces' can be cubes, table tops, walls, lanes, bus stops, cars, refrigerators, grocery stores, etc. Saint Augustine of Hippo is the one who used Latin term, which translates to treasure house (Confessions, Book Ten, chapter 8), which we take as 'Memory Palace.

Anyhow, as you rightly say, whether they be compartments, closets, store houses, barns, bus stops or train stations, they are the two-way ticket to memory and mind mastery!

Thanks for another epic adventure in mindful memory..

I tend to use Memory Palace/Memory Castle interchangeably. I can't really explain it, but these terms fuels my imagination as an amateur author to imagine huge spaces.

Memory Palace works best for me, because Its a physical place, a large place with MANY rooms
