I use buildings as walls cause they have turrets from the start and people don't attack them and if you use the f12 menu you can budge the buildings so noone can go between them
Also I like using the terrain as walls unless I'm making a water base then I put walls EVERYWHERE, in a big maze with lots and lots of turrets

Once you build a wall, you can no longer gain xp by fighting the silly bandits. The best way is just to build a building with turrets and place your archers on the top. This way, you can gain fighting xp, crossbow xp, and turret xp. A good defensive wall is only useful in end games when you have Retribution of God and Wrath of God. That said, if you has a base in Vain or some areas with the beak thing roaming around, you need a wall.
