Welcome back #exploringcrew to another #explore video. I apologise for the delay in the upload. Creating a new intro took longer than I planned but I hope you like it and the new style of editing I'm trying out.
##WARNING the police come here regularly so don’t bother trying ##
A former Brisbane textile mill, a major cotton supplier to the Australian textile industry, will be forced to wind down its Brisbane mill after rescue efforts failed to save it.
Up to 108 textile workers employed by the company are likely to lose their jobs, despite the efforts of unions and management to save the 60-year-old business.
The mill is one of three sites owned by a Brisbane textile company, with a further 100 staff employed at the company's mill at Moe and dye house at Tullamarine, both in Victoria, also under threat.
The company went into receivership on October 21 with debts believed to be around $10 million.
A auditing firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers, was appointed receiver and manager of the company, said the mill's 108 staff had been advised the business would be wound down over the next two to four weeks.
The plant will be placed in care and maintained while its assets are sold off in coming months.
The owner said escalating cotton prices had conspired against the company.
"The Mills had been hit by a range of factors including a steady rise in the price of raw cotton," The owner said.
"On top of this long term trend, prices have increased dramatically in recent weeks - by more than 60 cents per kilogram over the past week - due to recent pessimistic global harvest forecasts.
"These factors coupled with an inability to pass the price increases to key customers have substantially increased operating losses and made it extremely difficult to trade the Brisbane Mill during the receivership period. "In these circumstances, it is just not possible to keep the Brisbane mill running."
The owner said he understood the news would be "deeply distressing for Brisbane employees" but said the receivers were doing all they could to keep staff informed.
He said no guarantees could be given to staff regarding future employment at the company's other two sites in Victoria, where a decision on their future was still pending.
"Our intention over the next week or so is to continue to trade the Moe mill and Tullamarine dye house businesses while we examine the numbers and their viability in more detail and do whatever we can to find a buyer for property," The owner said.
