2023 Lexus GX460, better than the 2024 GX550?

V8s are going the way of the dinosaur, and this 2023 GX 460 may be your last chance at getting an affordable V8 off road SUV. The US hasn't had a Toyota Land Cruiser for a few years now, so this Lexus is next best option. A body on frame construction, naturally aspirated and proven 1UR V8, and the benefit of being the last offering of this chassis might make this the best and most reliable GX ever made. The 2024 GX550 looks promising but ditches the swing out tailgate and 1UR for a power lift gate and the 3.4l twin turbo V6 Toyota is now using for it's more demanding applications. The new Land Cruiser will be a more affordable option, but it will have a 2.4l turbo 4 cylinder and it will be priced starting in the mid 50,000 range. So, for only a little more money, is the 2023 GX460 your last chance for an affordable V8 off road SUV?

The GX 460 definitely is a steal. The GX 550 won't be that's for sure.

Great video. I bought a premium ’23 eminent white pearl GX460 with red interior three months ago, and I love it so much. I may have slightly overpaid at $65k out the door, but I think in the long run I will have definitely gotten my money’s worth. Very luxurious, and drop dead gorgeous for those of us who like the classic SUV look. Doesn’t hurt that I look great in it as I wear my Polo vests in Starbucks drive-thrus to pick up Pumpkin Spice Latte after Pumpkin Spice Latte.

I got a white 2023 Gx Black line earlier this year. Lifted with 2" Ironman foam cell Pro's, DrKdss bits to keep things buttoned up w the lift. No lean, everything is great. KDSS moans a litte during parking lot maneuvers but that's expected when lifting with Kdss. Threw on RCI skids (engine, transmission & fuel tank), Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek tires.. Took it a few times for mild overlanding. Super capable.. Great comfortable daily for my wife and the kids. Not too crazy about the ~13 mpg, but whatever. I absolutely love it.

*for years the GX460 and GX470 were a steal... nobody but the most devot Toyota fanbois knew they were Landcruiser Prados with V8s... now Lexus is marketing the GX550 for what it is, a Landcruiser... so no more secret and up will go the price.. they are excellent off-road*

This review popped up on my feed, thought it was going to be crap but it was actually pretty good. Job well done!

I got a 2023 GX almost a year ago and I'm happy with it. It wasn't easy moving on from my 2WD V8 4Runner Limited a couple of months ago because though they are very similar mechanically, the 4Runner drove a little better. This is because the GX is 1000lbs heavier, something a lot of people don't talk about. The transmissions are identical (besides the extra gear) so it definitely feels sluggish in comparison. I had updated the 4Runner brakes to the GX 460 brakes (they bolt right on) so along with the lighter weight & larger steering wheel, it also felt lighter on its feet (especially without the AWD push).

That being said the GX is smoother, quieter, and has the modern tech you expect. The swinging door and high load floor is a bit of a quirk but you deal with it (even if you'll never use the 3rd row). At first, the volume knob got me too, but I'm happy to report that muscle memory gets used to it! The worst part is the touch pad/buttons. Unfortunately, you HAVE to use it for certain functions. It wasn't perfectly thought out but it's not a deal breaker. I had a Corsa Pro Series muffler installed and though it wasn't as loud as I was expecting, I actually am liking it more subtle.

Looking forward to your GX550 video

I picked up my 2nd GX last week a 23’ 460-basically the last model to sell a toyota truck V8. Want it to last as long as my 15yr 470 w/205k. So picking the last model year is probably the best for reliability, but extremely sad not to order a new 550. Maybe the bugs in the 550 might take another 10yrs to be mint. The 460 drives like a sedan compared to my lifted 470, much better for a daily.

Waited to see the engine they were going with on the 24 and went straight to the dealership and bought a 2023 Luxury 460 with the Sport Package. I love this GX 460, traded my 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium for it.

I have a Magnaflow Overland exhaust on mine. Subtle, but loud enough, no drone. Highly recommended.

Toyota/Lexus have been using V6 Turbos for years now. They wouldn't risk putting those motors in their vehicles without torture testing them. The new GX 550 is a beast and looks way nicer than this one. I love the GX 460 but that new GX 550 is mint all around and I will buy the Overtrail +. Just my opinion

So I bought a 23 exactly like this. I didnt realize the 19" wheels had very few options. Basically stuck witht he Dunlops. What do you think?

My dealer has a lot of these on their lots so you should be able to negotiate a really good prices on these. Probably mid 50s since there’s a huge waiting list for the GX550.

Dude, you're funny. Love it. Not that it matters, but I sold my 2017 4Runner TRD Pro in Cement and got a 23 GX460 Luxury Sport. You summarized my rationale perfectly.

Hey, you’re really solid. I don’t think you need the silly cutaways, but that’s just me. If it’s working for you keep on keeping on. Great review otherwise.
