The Atari 2600 had one of the longest lifespans, from 1977 all the way to 1992. The Super Nintendo was out by then. How did this console stay alive for so long when the others did not?

Also, keep in mind that prices for things such as ram went way down when comparing 1977 ram prices and 1990 prices, so the later 2600 games could contain cartridges larger than 2 - 4 kbs, which made a tremendous difference in games.

In Brazil, the Atari 2600 was still considered a novelty in the 80s: it was one of the first (if not the first) video games produced locally, due to its cheap hardware, and back then it was quite difficult to import a Nintendo.

Actually, only after 1988, when Tec Toy began producing Master System locally, and the Nintendo clones were more widely available, that we could play newer consoles easier.

However, I still only had an Atari 2600 clone until the early 90s.

I used to work at a pawn shop where we had a shelf full of atari consoles, no power cords and a broken controller but since they were considered ancient no one wanted them. I dont know if they ever sold since i left

Keep in mind the NES and 2600 aren’t that different on the hardware level.

Same basic CPU, the main difference was the amount of ram available

it was low budget entertainment by 1988...people were throwing them and the games away or donating them to Goodwill or Salvation Army stores....where I picked a bunch up for dirt cheap in the early 90s. it was a wise investment.
