Tried to do this hike a few days ago but the trail completely stopped existing at the first stream crossing. The trees had completely overgrown it and we tried to get around but the vegetation was too thick and there was a cloud of mosquitoes around the creek. If the trail still exists, then it is very poorly maintained.

I've done this one a few times and it's a good little hike to a nice peak with awesome panoramic views. I wondered about the trail that continues beyond the boulders so thanks for that information!

That was a fun hike! I got lucky and did it in March 2017- spring approaching after a very wet winter- the chaparral was in bloom! I also remember that deflated basketball at the San Mateo Peak trail marker! It was on the ground when I did the hike! Next time, I will have to follow the trail past the peak- hopefully it leads to that small meadow just past the peak!
