Amazing how open 45 Drives are about their engineering and lab, there are many interesting videos on their YT channel!

I had a poor presales experience with 45 drives. I attempted to purchase a single unit to replace an on-premise archive server. Was an uphill battle to try and sell to management because it wasn't a known brand Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. 45 drives was very flaky with meeting to discuss comparing to what Dell had offered us. Because of timelines we ended up going with the more expensive Dell because they were so much more responsive.

I bought 6 nodes of the 45 chassis, put about 180 drives in them and now I have a CEPH cluster with 2PB raw.
I am very happy with the performance of those servers👍

Lets just be clear. You don't have redundant power supplies because of external forces. You have them because shit breaks, including power supplies. Now those power supplies may break due to external forces. Also, keeping your system up while performing maintenance is way easier with redundant power supplies. Replacing a PDU or UPS with systems running is something you can't do without redundant power supplies (or some dodgy death cables).

Thanks Tom, Always good to have follow-ups. I would typically use a setup like this for backups and currently, I'm considering LTO tapes. I haven't found any mentions of this on your channel. I guess for VM it's far from the best but for video footage, it makes a lot of sense. I was wondering if you had any experience with it, and how it integrates in a truenass backup workflow. I know some people use thunderbolt drive connected to a mac, but that doesn't sound very efficient.

Is there a reason that you go with 45 drives instead of a trueness supplied server? Is it a price issue?

Unfortunately for Aussies the USD makes these impossibly expensive for what you get.

Are these only sold as complete machines or can I get a chassis and equip it myself?

I don't trust Seagate and WD anymore. Only Toshiba left to choose from.

I really read the caption as "#45 drives, still.... good... in 2022" and I'm thinking, I don't think donny trump drives himself around anymore.. He's probably got a limo/driver for that.. Yes?
