The actual safety distance from the launching of M26 or M31B2 is 400 yards. Any position inside that distance to the launcher is taking your chances. I watched it and made videos of them at about 100 yards in a lateral position and took my chances while supervising.

You don't want to be behind it for at least 100 meters because they throw the ceramic plates that cover the rocket slots on the pod. Plus I've personally destroyed a metal 55gal drum that was behind the launcher as I fired.
