Ben E. King performing Stand By Me, from the album Don't Play That Song!

"Stand by Me" is a song originally performed in 1961 by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King and written by him, along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who together used the pseudonym Elmo Glick. According to King, the title is derived from, and was inspired by, a spiritual written by Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander called "Stand by Me Father," recorded by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead.

In 1960, Ben E. King was inspired to update the early 20th-century gospel hymn "Stand by Me" by Charles Albert Tindley, which was based on Psalm 46, "will not we fear, though the Earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea." According to the documentary History of Rock 'n' Roll, King had no intention of recording the song himself.

King had written it for the Drifters, who passed on recording it. After the "Spanish Harlem" recording session in 1960, King had some studio time left over. The session's producers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, asked if he had any more songs. King played it on the piano for them. They liked it and called the studio musicians back in to record it.

In 1968 I head Ben E. King sing this song at a small club on the coast of SC. King had a small band of 3 or 4 guys and I can still remember the single violin. The venue was not air conditioned. I was 18. The girl I was with was 17. 52 years later we are still a couple. And I still love the song.

A year after I married my second wife, she was bitten by a rare spider they couldn't identify.
The venom attacked her kidneys and she battled a little over 4 years. She was getting depressed from being unable to do the things she'd always done and was getting weaker and more and more tired. I decided to put together a Playlist of a couple hundred songs we both loved, and this was one of them. They helped keep up her spirits and she lived for a little over 50 months until a hospital ER visit exposed her to mycoplasma pneumonia. But I continued to pray over her, sing over her and play her Playlist as often as I was allowed. She passed away 2 days after Christmas 2013. I love you Tracy, you are such an inspiration for your bravery and Inner strength! I love and miss you and will see you soon!

It’s crazy how the “old songs” never actually get old

To my friend Maria,
I sent you this song as you prepare to leave hospital to go home while still battling cancer. I love you. I am forever rooting for you....praying for you. And I just wanted to share this song to remind you I am standing by you friend. 💪 Cancer has no age but at 32 years old I KNOW God has bigger plans for you and your babies.

Peace and Blessings to the person reading this ❤

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the Moon is the only light we'll see
No, I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So, darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand
Stand by me
Stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry
No, I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And, darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Whoa, stand now
Stand by me
Stand by me

Darlin', darlin', stand by me
Oh, stand by me
Oh, stand now
Stand by me
Stand by me

Whenever you're in trouble, won't you stand by me?
Oh, stand by me
Wow, just stand now
Oh, stand
Stand by me

Singing this to my new born daughter she was born last night 🎉.. I'll always stand by her

I bartended in a karaoke bar for 7 years, and my father would always come visit me at work, but always refused to sing. He was in his early 60s and it was a playful point of pride for him that he had never been dragged into taking part. One particularly bad night, after I had gone through the loss of my child, he took me to a local karaoke bar and we just drank all night and forgot our worries. Eventually, he got drunk enough he went up to sing and this was the song he chose. In all honesty, It was probably the worst singing I've ever heard, and still somehow the most beautiful at the same time. I know he did it just to put a smile on my face during a difficult time, and I don't think he ever truly knew just how much it really meant to me.

He passed suddenly less than a year later, and I sang this at his funeral. This song is one of those rare things that makes me simultaneously cry from missing him while smiling at what was such a priceless moment. A true testament to how the little things can often mean the most
