Rescued a 4000 CDS in 2017 from an ewaste bin, thing was in pristine condition, was an unbelievable find. The thing would go on to be the most reliable computer I've owned. The original 4GB Hard disk still worked, no capacitors issue, even the original battery still holds a charge for around a half hour. I have replaced the hdd with flash storage, it now runs Windows 98 with a DOS 3.1 dual boot, boots into DOS 7.1, type "Win3" or "win98". Mostly used for important photo backups, text documents with sensitive info you wouldn't want stored on an online pc etc as well as being used for a CD player on my 90s hifi stack to record cassettes from CD's playing from it in real time. Makes beautiful hifi recordings thanks to that OPL 3, a good deck and nice tapes. A 2013 i5 Surface tablet is used more often for that tho as I usually record 96/24 or 192/24 flacs to tape which shockingly, is just a liiitttle too much for that Pentium MMX

What I'd love to see is a laptop from each decade lined up and compared.
One from the 80s, one from the 90's, one from the 2000's, a 2010's machine, and a brand new laptop.
Maybe even a "portable" system from the 70's if you can get one.

I have the 520CDT version of this machine. The second HD that I had installed from the 90’s failed with a clicking sound which is probably stuck heads. Have an adapter card with an M.2 to IDE. Will be sending the drive off to try and get data off of it. Power supply board has a few shorted caps and needs recapped and it also needs two small Varta memory cells packs rebuilt. The FDD failed with a broken micro belt that I need to source from China.

My experience with old Toshiba laptops:
- 220CDS: It was an early Pentium laptop. There were two small rechargeable batteries under the keybaord that leaked and ruined the machine. When I tried to take it apart I discovered that they used different screw lenghts literally everywhere so I didn't even try reassembling it. At least there is a service manual for it on the web.
- Satellite Pro 4300: Pretty good laptop, sadly the screen hinges broke completely. Cant find usable spares.
- Satellite 4800: pretty solid pentium 3 laptop. Very similar to the 4300 on the inside but only has one RAM slot. The LCD polarizer on my example was starting to disintergrate on mine so I ordered another screen, and it also has the same issue.

From what I've heard the early Tecras can have issues with the memory slots, they get seperated from the mainboard and you have to solder them back.

Ah yes, taking me back to high school and first time in college days... I had one of these as well, although it wasn't as pimped out as it was in the video

When we lack TV motherboard for ZEC monitors, these old laptop motherboards work well!

I had a 2004 Toshiba Satellite which also had a socketed CPU, so I dropped in a Pentium M 725 over the stock Celeron 360. Even managed to overclock it with a small strand of wire placed into the CPU socket to act as a jumper! Worked great for many years :-)

I found a tossed out one of these (or close!) No power supply, so not sure if it works. Does it use a special power supply / charger? Your HDD sounds like a power saw! Is the battery a Lithium ion? Not Ni Cad? On that model, can the CPU be upgraded? Doesn't look like it!

Weird, I've never had a laptop that wasn't socketed, but all I've owned were Dells.

How easy did that keyboard come out compared to the crap we have today, because of this nihilistic obsession of shaving a few millimetres off the thickness of a device.

late 80s laptop! Maybe a 386 or 286. That'd be interesting vs the 1997

I remember my father bringing home the first laptop. It had a monochrome (I think) LCD with a huge bezel around it and ran IBM OS/2. It came with an even larger docking station not for connecting peripherals (although it was possible I think), but because the battery wasn't able to let it run for a long time.
