The lack of a strong magnetic field due to cooled core is kind of a dealbreaker. It means there's nothing stopping stellar winds from stripping any increased atmosphere and sending it into space.

You know what most plantes in the universe don't have but Earth has?
A overly heavy metallic core which gives extra safety from Solar Radiation with strong magnetic fields. Also, smaller diameter with respect to the total mass leading to slightly more gravitational strength which leads to extra thick atmosphere.

Earth is a rare Gem of a planet. Don't underestimate the uniqueness of it. Other planets are like coal and Earth is like a diamond in between.

I think Mr DeGrasse said in another video that if we, humans can't find the way to stop natural disasters here, on earth it would be pretty much impossible to find the way to terraform another planet.

Heating up mars is like when you sleep in a very cold place that has a huge heater in it. You are never comfortable because its too cold when its off and too hot when its on, so you are constantly messing with it to be comfortable about 30 seconds every 15 minutes

No magnetic field, no atmosphere.
Unless, you can also maintain a solar wind shield at L1 that won't also block too much sunlight.

-weak magnetic field
-thin atmosphere
-cold core
-38% of earth’s surface gravity

“let’s go to mars guys”

The problem with Mars is that the core is cold. People don't think about this, but a large portion of the heat of the earth comes from the core.

Let's put all of that effort into our earth. 🌎

For anyone getting excited, this would happen over the course of hundreds of years

This has already been done. I watched a documentary called “total recall” and they had a machine that created an atmosphere. Really cutting edge stuff.

Elon also said, "If you want to warn it up in a hurry, just drop nuclear bombs"

Just a side note, all of this is technically possible with technology that we have today. The only problem is that it would take centuries, or even possibly longer to makenit happen.

You forgetting the most important thing. You need a magnetic field, without that no tarraforming is possible in any way. Im angry that they always seem to "forget" about that simple fact.

The biggest problem is Mars has no magnetosphere so the atmosphere gets raked away by the solar winds. We need to figure that out first. Earth would benefit from terraforming Mars because we would have a solution in our back pocket that we can use when the Earth's core slows its spin and our magnetosphere gets too weak to protect our atmosphere.

I'm disappointed that he didn't mention that Mars is geologically inert.. it was no dynamo, and thus, no magnetic field to redirect the solar wind from the sun, which is actively sloughing off Mars' already thin atmosphere. Not only would the new, thicker atmosphere not last all that long, the amount of unfiltered UV you'd receive living there both from that and a total lack of ozone would be problematic, to say the least.
