I guess since they're pushing for the absolute max speed it might be lower overhead. But for commercial microwave it uses a form of 802.11 or a modification of those so you can get the encryption that comes with wireless AC. So sniffing might not be as easy as you were saying. Also for range, the height they have them at would be pretty limited so 10-15 miles would probably be the cap. If they got them up on reasonably tall towers they could get upwards of 100 miles off of one relay. Like your comment about putting it on the roof would actually help since they would take a relay or two out of the chain probably cutting down on time added by the relay being done.
