Painting on Clothing with ACRYLIC PAINT! (No Fabric Medium Needed!)

I developed a new method of painting on fabric using acrylic paint without fabric medium! I am so happy with the results I got from this! I couldn't find anything similar online.

You just need some water and hair conditioner. The end result turns out looking like a cool faded design that embeds the pigments into the fibers. Give it a try and let me know if it works for you too!

Btw for anyone who wants to do this on a dark fabric! Make a white base for the painting, and then, and only then paint to get vibrant colors.

In 1974..(48 years ago!) I painted a design on cotton sheet with acrylic paint at school.
It is in perfect condition...as bright as the day I painted it and no cracks!

WOW!!! You just saved my butt! All the craft stores are out of 'Fabric Medium' bc it's almost Halloween. I only had a little left & have a huge project for a little precious girl. I didn't want to let her down - so *THANK* *YOU* !!! xxx

Thanks so much for this! I've seen fabric softener as another option to mix into paint, but I don't buy the liquid kind. I'm not doing full shirts, but wanted to make patches out of old shirts that are too worn to be donated. I'll update with how they turned out!

It depends on what type of fabric you painting on.If you're painting on a stiff fabric like denim or canvas undiluted acrylic paint works on those kind of stiff fabrics. However if you're painting on thin flexible fabric like t shirt fabric then you should use half water half acrylic paint and a drop of conditioner like you say.

I wasn’t so hopeful for future. Then I watched this lol. Can’t wait to try! Am trying to make a custom Jean jacket as baby shower gift. Started on a jacket but it’s for sure gonna be my practice run bc I found out hard way about bleeding thru. It’s obvious but I just had a ditz moment lol

After the first wash, is it okay to wash these acrylic painted clothes with other (regular) clothes?

Also you should know that a few years ago I tested permanent markers on white cotton T-shirt fabric. After they dried I hand washed the white cotton t-shirt fabric and none of the permanent marker ink washed out or bled.

As an painting artist, I have always learned that diluting acrylic with too much water breaks the chemical bonding of the acrylic paint, therefore we use medium to thin the paint. So it makes me wonder how it doesn’t affect your result using that amount of water. Have you tried to use medium to dilute your paint? You can even buy fabric medium. Have you tried that?
