I love octaves. Switching back and forth adds a nice call and response and can help 1 riff feel like 2. They can also add a faux lead/solo Choking Victim/Leftover Crack uses octaves this way on almost every song

One other cool thing about octaves is that they allow you to define the chord beyond just a power chord. Punk bands typically don't play full barre chords because they're too muddy. But you can put those chord-defining notes in the octaves. And because they're spread out over the neck, it won't sound muddy. NOFX will often play the major third as an octave if it's a chord you wouldn't expect to be major. Or they'll play the minor third if it's a chord you wouldn't expect to be minor (like on the classic IV to iv movement they love to use).

it was also used as the solo for Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Fun fact Ryan Greene used to setup a guitar with just 2 strings that was solely an octave guitar for Nofx and all the other Fat bands

Wow that riff is straight MC5 but using octaves instead of barre/power chords. It's interesting how much of a change it makes.

I got into using octaves from listening to Smashing Pumpkins stuff.

There is nothing wrong with octaves, and they add a distinct tone style of music.
