I don't know if this is related to anything but ten thousand years ago, in the Greek mythology, the Olympian gods was said they had body armor and god like weapons that look they were made of Gold. Also Gold in those ancient times wasn't used for currency, it was the copper, it is unknown what was the real use of Gold in the ancient times but it was really valuable by Gods or similar to that.

Also the Aztecs and Mayans depicted their Gods using Gold like body suits or body armor, and most of their vehicles were depicted using Gold. The Aztecs valued so much the Gold they protected but not for wealth nor currency, it is unknown since most of that information was destroyed or stolen by the Spaniards Catholics.
