Thanks for this guide. Very succinct and the instructions worked, although I had to do the "restore to factory default settings" to get mine back to life. My Echo Dot does only a few things: turn on/off my living room light, tell me the weather and play my favorite radio station, yet I look forward to that voice that says... "okay..." and then does exactly what you want. Thanks again.

One of mine keeps turning the microphone off on its own and staying red. I deregistered it and reset it with the action button hold down, etc.. it still just defaults to mic off. (It works fine when I turn mic on, but turns itself back to not listening mode within minutes. Ideas? Also, I saw some complaints about the fast talking of this video. I loved it., to the point and covers what it needs to without the BS. I find most tutorials spend way too much time rambling and not getting the point.. so thank you for this one.

FOREVER UPDATING LOOP FIX

If your Echo Dot is stuck in an Updating Loop forever, do this. ON the Rotating Red Ring, press and hold MUTE and MINUS (Volume down) buttons down simultaneously for about 30 seconds until it says "Removing your SmartHome Devices" and then release them. Wait a bit and then when you press the Action button and your Echo will say "Now ready for Setup". Or you can unplug and plug it, and it will play the new Welcome Tone and saying your device "Is now ready for setup, go to the Alexa App".

Go to the Alexa App and chose the bottom right icon for Settings and then chose "Add New Device" and chose "Echo Dot". You'll see it listed if detected via Bluetooth... pick it... and then pick your Wifi Hotspot for it to connect to as you've been through before.

Tada... your Echo is back, but the WAKE Word has been reset to "Alexa" so you'll have to change it back to whatever you prefer, i.e. "Alexa, change my Wake Word to

This will last until the next Power Outage / Power Cycling of your Alexa at which point the dmmnn thing will try to update again and get stuck in the update loop like it did before. Still, you can at least bring it back from the dead until then.

My dot 4th gen is suddenly unresponsive today, doesn't listen to me at all, then I dropped in on it, placed phone in other room, I can hear what is said from other side but i'm inaudible, I think mike hardware broke, I hope its just software but so far no luck, and astonishing fact is warranty just ended 3 days ago.

UPDATE: after unplugging the adaptor itself for around 5 mins did the trick, it works just fine!!!

My Alexa is stuck in setup mode. Tried resetting it mad everytime I connect to the dot to internet the speaker turns off & doesn't function properly

hi. I don't know if anyone else is having this issue, but when you talk to alexa on the dot it has a slight hickup or slight crackle in the audio. It doesn't do that with music, just the voice or other sounds on it. I don't know if it's something that needs to be looked at or if everyone is just having this same problem.

My Echo dot 5 setup mode is Shouting down on it's own once the Alexa App is looking for wifi connection to connect it with. I can't find any solution on the internet, I've tried with several resets and other devices to run the Alexa App but nothing helps. everytime I try to look for a Wifi connection setup mode shuts down.

Echo did everything except respond to wake word until I changed the outlet I was plugging into. How weird that power draw disabled the feature?

Just found your page...good info.. Wondering if you have ever run into VPN issues with the dot? I have an echo dot paired with firestick setup in home theater mode so the dot provides the sound for my TV.  Works great except when I start a VPN...than no sound.  Used with Windscribe and ProtonVpn...same results, picture and no sound.

Every time I connect my Alexa to a bluetooth speaker, after disconnecting it again, it loses the sound from the built-in speakers.
