Much faster if you realize that 2^3 = 8, and 2^4 = 16. 

Then you can simply distribute the exponents to the original exponents to get: 2^3x-6 = 2^4x+1

After you get that, you can just solve from 3x-6 = 4x - 1 to get -10 :)
