WAAQ • Somalia's Ancient Religious Order

Показать описание
Waaq (also Waq or Waaqa) is the name for the sky God in the Cushitic languages of both the Oromo people and Somali people in the Horn of Africa. The word still means God in present Oromo language. Some traditions indicate Waaq is associated with the Harar region.

In Oromo and Somali culture, Waaq, Waaqa or Waaqo was the name of God in their pre-Christian and pre-Muslim monotheistic faith believed to have been adhered to by Cushitic groups. It was likely brought to the Horn by the speakers of the Proto-Cushitic language who arrived from North Sudan in the Neolithic. In modern times, the religion has mostly declined ever since the arrival of Islam and Christianity.

This name for God was used mainly by Somali people and Oromo people before and after Christianity and Islam came to the Horn of Africa There are also ancient names of villages which involve the word (WAAQ) in the Somali language and also Oromo language.

The most intriguing observation according to Pilgrims and Syncretism, "The Oromo take pride in their black skin which they relate to Waaqa's own divine blackness. We believe the Waaqa is also black just like us (Waaqa quracca)..." He walks the earth in the form of an Old Man.

There are also Somali towns and cities that relate to this religion such as the town of Caabudwaaq (literally meaning “worship waaq), Ceel-waaq (well of Waaq). Waaq denotes the single god of the early pre- Abrahamic, monotheistic faith believed to have been adhered

I would recommend to check out the history of the Oromo people in this regard. They are by far the biggest ethnic group in Ethiopia/horn of Africa, and still have a population that practices this religion (Waqeefena) which is considered native to them. They are now a majority Muslim people, but they still have some people that practice this faith and they have preserved its rituals the best.

Waaq and Eebbe are one and the same. They were used by ancient Somalis in reference to deity or more appropriately God. Mordern Somalus hardly mention them, instead they call Allah in their place. I, personally, often use Eebbe rather than Allah. That doesn’t translate that I am not Muslim but just to keep our ancestors’s traditions alive!
