What Really Goes on in Engineering Job Interviews?

This video continues last week’s video, where I shared my job-hunting process so far. My goal with creating this video is to show you what truly happens when you’re job hunting and what these engineering interviews are like.

There tend to be toxic people in engineering that like to gatekeep everything, so I’m trying to change that by sharing what I wish I knew. Timestamps are as follows:

00:00 Intro
00:38 Interview 9
05:11 Interview 10
06:40 Interview 11
08:58 Interview 12
11:51 Interview 13
17:07 Summary

MY SOCIAL MEDIA:

ABOUT ME:
My name is Tamer Shaheen, and I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Waterloo, currently working as a Mechanical Design Engineer. I like to make videos about university/college, engineering, and personal development. Thank you so much for watching!!

I believe the equation at 3:00 is not right. The equation is P=RI^2

Hi, I am mechanical engineer from germany and currently also job hunting with not to much professional experience. Seeing your process and that i am not alone getting rejected all the time really helps me not taking it personal and keeps me optimistic and enthusiastic about future Interviews. Great work 🤗

Well done in the interview. I didn't understand a thing - but I loved the transparency

I am proud of you, Tamer, and you inspire those of us who are studying engineering. Yes, you did make some mistakes in your equations which likely resulted in your not being selected for one or more of the jobs; but your engineering knowledge and ability to recall it are absolutely amazing. Those were some tough questions, and I don't know how you kept your confidence up after receiving all those rejections. I'm not going to lie, I would have been feeling like perhaps I should have chosen another career major (lol). However, you are showing us that persistence is key and to never lose confidence in yourself and your undeniable worth. You were definitely born as an inspiration for the world, Tamer, and I would love to meet you one day. I feel like I could just sit with you and talk about engineering concepts all day and never be bored. Good luck on your interview(s), and I hope that the next update will inform us that you got the job.

Salam Tamer - I think that being laid was a blessing in disguise for you. As a viewer these videos are probably the most interesting, entertaining and informative videos of yours I've watched. I believe that at the end of this process you will be better of for it and be grateful to have gone through a novel experience that makes your life more interesting.

Its funny how quickly circumstances can change. I remember watching your day in a life videos a few months ago and being inspired to work harder while I was looking for an engineering job. Alhumdullilah I have been blessed with a job now that I'm very happy with and that I couldn't imagine landing a few weeks ago but now YOU are on the job hunt. Life is fickle like that.

I know regardless of what happens you are destined for great things insh'Allah. Keep up the great work not just for yourself but for the millions you inspire now and in the future!

P.S. I'm surprised at how technical your interview questions are. Mine were not so technical, maybe because I was applying to entry level positions?

Dude thank you so much and it's so nice to see this transparency when it comes to you finding a job and it's fun for me to think of these engineering interview questions too :)

Thanks for documenting these hard times Tamer, not very people are open about this process. Really useful for young and experienced professionals

I applied to 7 companies and been rejected by every single one of them. I have a job but I am going to get laid off soon, so no biggie. This video was so good man, honestly I am so excited about my next interviews in the following weeks.

Hey Tamer, as a recently graduated mechanical engineer, I can safely say that I would not have done half as well as you during those interviews haha. But that makes me confident in you finding a job because you’re genuinely a great engineer man 👌🏽

thank you for documenting the hiring process. I am currently looking for a job with no prior work experience and it has been thought, but seeing that the process is tedious and challenging for everyone encourages me and does not make me feel alone.

You are definitely going to get a job. The rejections might be discouraging, but you will be blessed. You deserve it. With that being said I'm just about to start college in mechanical engineering and have been watching your vids for a couple months now and just wanted to say you are helping me a ton. Thank you.

I recently graduated and have been attended few interviews. I think when it comes to interviewing right, it should be like a proper conversation between two humans. I don't have much technical or professional experience but I am always bombarded with questions about them and I don't know how honest I can be with them. I know I am capable of handling those situations if they arrive but sometimes im left with no space to ask questions and it feels like a viva. its been bumming me out this job hunt honestly... so exhausted but im happy you're doing good progress. Keep it up my man! Waterloo has always been my dream uni

Tamer, I really appreciate your transparency and sincerity in capturing what your journey as mechanical engineering going for job interview. As a non engineering professional, I find it helpful regardless of my career path. Keep up the great work.

I'm currently job hunting and your videos are so inspiring man. I'm sure you're gonna crack a big offer. Keep up the good work.
And can you also share the questions you found challenging like the advanced injection moulding stuff for example. I believe they will help a lot of people out. A separate video idea perhaps.

I'm in my sophomore year as an ME major and seeing your videos is honestly inspiring, I'm really intimidated by the career-finding process but obviously even with your intelligence and abilities it is still also a challenge. Keep being persistent and get that Apple job boi 🔥🔥🔥
