SYNOPSIS:
Hattie, a New Orleans hooker, meets a photographer named Bellocq at her brothel one night and, after he photographs her, he befriends her 12-year-old daughter, Violet. When Violet is brought on as a working girl by her mother's madam and Hattie skips town to get married, Violet quickly loses her innocence and focuses on reuniting with Bellocq. But a life with Bellocq is compromised for Violet after her mother returns to town.

For those that haven't already seen this movie-this isn't supposed to be an endorsement or romanization of underage relationships. It's a commentary on what used to be normal in society in that men married women much younger than themselves-including teenagers so that we can understand how public opinion on these matters have changed over time. The only thing that is now considered questionable about this movie is that Brooke Shields was 11 when cast in this role which was a sexualized one and now that's become much less common in that typically young-looking adult women are cast to play minors in roles like this one to avoid exploiting underage girls. Whether you find it disgusting or not-pretending that these types of things never happened (and still don't happen) doesn't erase the fact that they did...
