It must have been so akward for that guy to be romantic and lovey dovey with a 12 year old.

“You deserted the child!” ...you married the CHILD

The guy had a point. The mother should have never ever abandoned her child.

Instead of marrying her he could've protected her by being a father figure too ya know

To those who are wondering, eventually violet’s husband lets her go to love a ‘normal’ life with her mother, younger brother and new step father. But due to the fact she never had a ‘normal’ childhood she is very worried and kind of unsettled by it all. Eventually they’re about to hop on a train and before that I think they were going to take a picture and slowly but gradually the camera zooms in on Violet, subtly implying that the camera handler, violet’s new stepfather is eyeing in on her. A potential repeat of her being preyed upon by an older man. The ending honestly is left very open ended, so it’s all speculation in the last scene.

Sooo was adoption just an imaginary concept back then?

The man who apparently saved her from abuse married her and is sleeping with her hence continuing to abuse her. And the mother sexually abused her and deserted her. Sad life for the child. Hope the step dad doesn't abuse her.

Brook Shied got plenty of public slack in her Pretty Baby role. She was the most controversial 12 year old in the business.

I think that the movie is important but would have preferred they use an older actress with a very young face than an actual 12 year old.

this woman left her daughter for men to destroy, and this man married her to save her and then the mother comes back to take her from the man who saved her

It's a testament to Keith Carradine's performance that I'm both uncomfortable and moved to tears in this scene. He fully made me believe he loves this girl. The last shot of him in the film is devastating.

The mother is such a hypocrite, she did abandon Violet and then she came back out of nowhere and is angry at the photographer guy for marrying Violet as if that’s a heinous act when she let her own daughter be auctioned and @bus3d by grown men in that brothel, the photographer married Violet to take care of her, the mother left her because she wanted a “respectable life” so badly that she was willing to leave her daughter behind in order to have it

God...I hated Sarandon's characters In this movie. The ending makes me feel sad but i'm glad of watching this Louis Malle's film. He was very brave at directing this.

If Pretty Baby came out in 2019: The director would be blacklisted, the man actor’s history would be looked at very intensively to find sth controversial. Brooke Shields would have won an Oscar.

I did not feel anything like paedophilia in that man. it is old movie at that in period of 1900 or before it was very common in society that after girls start to have periods, girls used to get married and average age of girls getting periods is 11 -15.
Bellocq is the one who marries her so that she can stay away from prostitution profession and her mother had eloped with other man. Bellocq gives her to mother back when he come to know that her step father is going to send her to school which will give her better life further

Marrying young was a common occurrence back then. My great-great grandmother married my great-great grandfather when she was twelve. I'm not saying that kids should get married now, but in the past it was expected. Girls were often forced into relationships that they didn't want simply because their families couldn't care for them or wanted a dowry. Luckily, my great-great grandparents loved each other and eloped so that she wouldn't be sold to some guy with a huge ranch (at least this is what my grandmother tells me). It is also a good thing that my great-great grandfather was her best friend growing up....

about 92 years ago, my grandmother married to my grandfather, at that time she was 12 yo and my grandfather about 16 yo. at that era it was very common to be married at such young age. If this girl more than 15 she had not been proposed, so the entire family would be in worried.
