In this video, we explore the biggest construction sites of the future - the ones that will one day provide us with real megastructures of all kinds and purposes.

From space elevators and Dyson spheres, to enormous ships and gargantuan space stations to live in. But we won't just marvel at their scale - the real questions are: could we really build all these in the near future, what tech do we need to get the job done, and ultimately, will it work as intended, or these megastructures will turn out to be megagraves?

In our analysis we well use real engineering projects, as well as top sci-fi examples from books, movies and also from the unique world of massive multiplayer online game EVE Online.

The game is known for its intricate economy, politics, and warfare mechanics, where players can engage in a variety of activities, including mining resources, trading, fighting, and of course, building numerous megastructures with rich customisation options.

We imagine on making such mega projects, yet we ourselves haven't united

Why is it that when we imagine humans or beings from other planets, thousands of years from now, we always assume that they will have the same set of values we have now? A set of values that keeps us from attaining our full potential and always being in a state of war.

This really makes me wonder how much unlimited minerals, iron, steel, and other resources must exist in the Star Wars universe to construct objects of this size, let alone TWO Death Stars!

Surprised there's no mentioning of Mobile Suit Gundam anime at all, because that series had people build megastructures on space, from having a bunch O'neill cylinder colonies being placed on various langrangian points, cities on the Moon, to giant battleships and mechs, super weapons that utilizes the sun's power like Solar Ray and the Solar Flare System, or even turning Asteroids into a base.

eve online has some awesome concepts and i can see they will evolve more over the next 10 years, but is incredibly overwhelming to get into.

Eve online is amazing, its been going for 20 years, there are over 6000 solar systems, 2600+ wormhole systems, if you die, you lose your ship and everything, its long term, its strategic, and now FPS is coming in 2024, where you can not only fly throughout a massive universe doing thousands of different things, you can land and explore and fight in FPS mode.

Eve online is badass. My only complaint is also a positive... but it's something I sometimes have trouble with - the requirement that you cooperate with other players - it's great because that's the point of these games in the first place - it's not great because sometimes not having a very set schedule isn't great for MMO games in general, if you're planning on working with some of the same players numerous times - whether you know them or not, it's hard to organize something like that without set schedules - and in Eve, working with perfect strangers with no stake might be "relatively safe" in the high security sectors, it's get ya shot in the back really fast anywhere else - and sometimes you can still get ganked in high security, haha...

Don't get me wrong... I really do love the game. It's got great world building (...universe building in this case?) and the gameplay is pretty great too - and to top it off they've definitely improved the graphical fidelity of the game substantially - which is something I certainly do appreciate. Graphics might not be everything, but they certainly are SOMETHING.

According to David T Adair, if we build metal foundries in space, we could produce super strong lighter weight metals that could be used on Earth or in space to create Megastructures.

To the people talking about resources required for such structures... Once you leave earth, the materials are vast and abundant. Even an asteroid could provide more iron than we could ever utilize.
