I originally wanted to include the Warlord/Early Republic era but there were so many details to wrangle I feel like that deserves another more detailed video in the future.

I really wonder about that interesting ROC controlled pocket of land that Myanmar took in the 61's. I never knew of any ROC territory that lasted longer than 1949 in the mainland

Great video! I liked how you integrated the artificial islands in the South China sea and the change of outside borders

Regarding the ROC claim over Mongolia after 2002, I’ve replied to one of the comments below, but I thought I’d repost this because the situation really is peculiar and hard to understand.

Basically, we're still stuck with Article 4 of the Constitution: territory of the Republic of China according to its existing national boundaries shall not be altered except by resolution of the National Assembly). [1] As far as I know, the "territory can only be changed by National Assembly" thing was not resolved in any of the current Constitutional Amendments; although the NA does not and will not exist (since Article 1 of the Amendments says all provisions pertaining to elections to the National Assembly "shall cease to apply"), and the Legislative Yuan now holds the power to propose amendments to the Constitution, it seems that it's still unclear if the power to alter "existing boundaries" has been delegated to the LY. This might have been a deliberate oversight to allay concerns that the Constitution could be amended to proclaim _de jure_ Taiwanese independence.

So, with current governmental policies, we of course acknowledge and recognize the _de facto_ independence of Mongolia, but as the Constitution and its amendments currently stand, I think the argument can be made that we not only have the claim to its territory, but moreover the ROC government is unable to constitutionally relinquish that claim, unless another amendment is passed to specifically delegate the powers to change "existing boundaries" to the LY, which I don't think the KMT and its allies will allow. Hence I think @EmperorTigerstar made the right call here: of course we all know Mongolia is independent, but the peculiarities of our constitutional situation doesn't allow us to relinquish our claim, so from a purely legal point of view it's "status unclear" for us.

[1] For those unfamiliar with ROC/Taiwan political history, what "existing national boundaries" means is of course unclear, but an argument can be made for the definition laid out in Article 4 of the 1936 Draft Constitution (五五憲草) that specifically lists all provinces and territories that constitute the Republic of China, and Mongolia is among them. However, Taiwan is *NOT* listed, since it was of course ceded to Japan after the First Sino-Japanese War, so it was a part of the Japanese Empire at this time. Some pro-independence narratives use this fact to illustrate that the ROC actually doesn't have a solid claim to Taiwan.

When I first watched this video I was sure that there was a mistake that Taiwan still controlled islands less than 3 miles from mainland China... but after researching the Kinmen islands, it's true... Can't believe Taiwan still controls them, this would likely be a trigger point in any future conflict between the ROC and PRC. Great video

Not sure if the 1950-1953 occupation of NK is accurate, PRC didn't claim it owned North Korea and also North Korea did maintain civil administrative control over the parts of the North held by the anti-UN coalition.

I feel like cutting from 1948 to 49 was a bit much, so much happened that it feels glossed over

While this video is "every year", I feel it moves too quickly when territory was changing hands and too slowly when it wasn't.

Also: Is this inspired by the Barbie movie?

In 1946, ROC recognized independence of Mongolia, but 7 years later, 1953, they denied their decision in 1946, reclaiming Mongolia as a part of ROC.
After 1990s, ROC have admitted Mongolia's existence. After 2002 which is when DPP got in charge, they set up a representative office in Ulaanbaatar, and have added Mongolia to their list of countries on Ministry of Foreign Affair's website.

In 2012, MAC (Mainland Affairs Council) have officially announced that "In Mingguo 36th (1947), when constitution is announced, Mongolian independence have been recognized by the Republic of China, therefore, it is no longer inherent territory of the Republic of China as mentioned in Article IV of the constitution.

Maps of ROC including Mongolia is still used for ROCMC (Marine Corps), but is generally very rare to see in the country today.

Mongolian claim is marked wrong. @EmperorTigerstar

Modern China should start counting from 1911 and not 1945 though

Interesting that the ROC still claims Mongolia and parts of Siberia.

Would be nice if there was a "controlled by third party" color for places like the South China Sea.
