Nice report as always S0, could be an interesting show on the 10th May... with the Sun, Earth & Saturn alignment (as well as the others you've shown on the news). The spots could pop and give us some much needed flares, well as long as there not too big that is.... shame there will probably be a massive earthquake somewhere!!!

*Spectroscopic diagnostics of laboratory air plasmas as a benchmark for spectral rotational (gas) temperature determination in TLEs*

[1] We have studied laboratory low pressure (0.1 mbar ≤ p ≤2 mbar) glow air discharges by optical emission spectroscopy to discuss several spectroscopic techniques that could be implemented by field spectrographs, depending on the available spectral resolution, to experimentally quantify the gas temperature associated to transient luminous events (TLEs) occurring at different altitudes including blue jets, giant blue jets, and sprites. Laboratory air plasmas have been analyzed from the near UV (300 nm) to the near IR (1060 nm) with high (up to 0.01 nm) and low (2 nm) spectral resolution commercial grating spectrographs and by an in-house intensified CCD grating spectrograph that we have recently developed for TLE spectral diagnostic surveys with ≃0.45 nm spectral resolution. We discuss the results of lab tests and comment on the convenience of using one or another technique for rotational (gas) temperature determination depending on the altitude and available spectral resolution. Moreover, we compare available low resolution (3 nm ≤Δλ≤7 nm) N2 1PG field recorded sprite spectra at 53 km (≃1 mbar), and resulting vibrational distribution function, with 1 mbar laboratory glow discharge spectrum (Δλ=2 nm) and synthetic sprite spectra from models. We found that while the relative population of N2(B3Πg, v=2−7) in sprites and laboratory produced air glow plasmas are similar, the N2(B3Πg, v=1) vibrational level in sprites is more efficiently populated (in agreement with model predictions) than in laboratory air glow plasmas at similar pressures.

That was so cool!!!!  I hate that I found this site about a year ago.... I would have loved to watch when the sun when it was more active!!!  Quick question:  It seems that the sun spots get REALLY quiet when they turn earth-facing, and then get active as the are close to the limb... either turning in or turning away.  Am I crazy, or is that a known phenomenon?

I have a weird question. I swear I was watching the sky one day when I noticed a cloud that was your normal puffy cloud. But, it had rainbow like features and colours on the top and around it's edges. It also seemed to be expanding from the inside at a quick speed. I'm not lying! It just kept growing! Is this some natural cloud? No idea where to ask such a ridiculous question, so I asked here.

erupting from the leading convergence of the magnetic regions, yes, nice, could I please propose that you do not spit those complex verbal rainbows in rap-fashin so that I can actually watch the stuff without replaying it 3 times so that I can understand?
Maybe I'm asking too much, but damn, you are not making it easy to understand you. Why? Isn't it  the responsibility of the communicator to cater to the audience and provide the best possible service of information conveying over the rap cool factor? Maybe I'm mistaken. I'm just a stupid Pole, so do as you please, but I would appreciate less of rapping with possibly less of sophisticated language when there is no need for it (isn't convergence supposed to mean mixing here? idk - you tell me). But convergence implies same output which I don't get from this short remark - we know concept of convergence of capitalism and socialism into social democracy everywhere. It more or less took place - that's why nobody is talking about it. Anyways, I would point to Wal Thornhil, he just uses plain english whenever possible. Why the fuck not? Why confuse with fireworks and sophistry - not that I am accusing You of these (those? -rule to check).

Maybe you're just not that keen on getting more people here. That's ok. But remember - the more volume the more people buy the extra stuff you sell. Capitalists do not get rich by selling stuff to other capitlists, but to the masses. I want it done already, dollar crashed, new monetary system in place. Or even better - the disillusion of the populace within state mythology. I want it gone, and I want to see the results. Well. That's just my humple nothing.
