I don't have a lot of experience with air dry clay, but I've come up with a trick how not to get the cracks in my thicker pieces. Since the cracks appear due to the difference in drying of the surface and the deeper layers, I just put my pieces to dry under "a dome". I use various household items like caps, flower pots or tupperware and I put something under the edge of the "dome" (usually a pencil) in order to tilt it and lift it a bit from the surface so that the air can get in, but not too much. I think this helps that the whole piece dries evenly. I am still experimenting, though... 😄
