its an interesting topic for a video, but I definantly wouldnt say is the most obscure, to me, the most obscure thing ive seen is in the studiopolis act 2 stage. when the chicken badnik weather reporter shows the sunny weather card, its actually an illistration from the master system manual depicting injury, but hilariously repurposed as a sun

I see your sonic 2 reference and I raise you this:

If you play as tails then sonic will pilot the tornado. If you look closely, you can see he is wearing yellow goggles. These are in reference to an unused sprite asset in sonic 1 that sonic would have supposedly worn while underwater. Now THAT's obscure!
