Have Companies & The US Government Pay You!

It’s no question that the biggest tech companies in the world are extraordinarily powerful. They not only have billions of users, but they have sensitive data about billions of users. But, what if I told you there was a company that was even more powerful than FAANG. This company not only controls FAANG but virtually every company in the world. The name of this company is SAP and they specialize in providing enterprise solutions for companies. This includes software like inventory planning, supply planning, human capital management, financial management, and customer relationship management. And, at the time of making this video, 87% of all global commerce goes through SAP which works out to a whopping $46 trillion. Considering the power that SAP has, you would think that it would be an evil background company that pulls a bunch of strings. But, they’ve actually been relatively tame and good-mannered relative to how much power they have. This video explains the story of the world’s most powerful company that you’ve never heard of: SAP.

My first job as a software intern back in 2018 was to build a tool to replace SAP's CMS tools. I created it in less than a month. I was shocked to find out later that I saved my employer thousands of dollars by developing this by watching YouTube tutorials.

SAP is like Salesforce: very proprietary and requiring specialized analysts/developers to support it. They go hard on their sales teams. After all, once a company adopts it, it is hard to switch.

SAP is evil, but in other ways. Their software is a monster. I never heard anyone say "I love SAP".

I used to work for a company that uses the SAP ERP customised for hospitals, a lot of people used to say it isn't user friendly and difficult to learn. Personally it too me a few days to learn and after that I found it very powerful and easy to use, it also doesn't delete previous events so you can trace fraudulent behaviour too. So yeah I can say SAP has a great software to use and I loved using it.

My dad works for a company that does SAP implementation, so I'm rather familiar with SAP's product line. I remember back in 2015, when HANA came out, there were so many nights where he was up till 3 or 4 at night because international customers wanted to migrate to hana as soon as it came out

I always wonder, how a system with one of the worst user designs can be so important at literally every company I worked for.

I used to work on SAP for a food and beverage company. All I could say is, the software is slow and outdate. But very resilient. I had a feeling that it wold be cheaper to set up your own sql servers that did the same thing for a fraction of the cost. Also Microsoft have developed their Dynamics 365 that costs a fraction and is much more versatile and does many of the same thing as SAP

In the factory automation world, the equivalent of SAP is Rockwell Automation software and hardware. Customers don't want to "risk" moving to anything else. It's like the corporate hive mind. 🙂

SAP - would have never thought SAP was that big but now that I think about (and being part of the IT community) every company I have ever worked for has SAP. Some of those companies will never get rid of it because it's part of the backbone of the companies IT infrastructure. It's incredible how intertwined this company is everything. Amazing.

Sure everyone always says SAP is horrible, SAP is slow, SAP is convoluted
But people should know that SAP is purpose built for customers workflows, so if the customer defines a crappy workflow, the software will reflect that for all eternity, or the SAP consultant, or the business consultant or whoever implements it...
I don't think SAP is as bad as everyone says... most people just have no idea how to properly describe what they do everyday for the software to understand properly what you want it to do.
But that's just my two cents...

my mom works at SAP and it's funny, in the whole larger (multi-city) area around - whoever you ask they'll know someone working there. As a kid I visited their headquarters a few times and it's always been really nice. It's a huge and very successful company yet they put a lot of money into employee programs and benefits as well as generally into the region. If I remember correctly Walldorf (where they are based) is actually one of the richest cities in whole Germany. And yeah - no scandals really. The Founders put a lot of their money into local programs, especially educational programs, cultural events and a lot of local sport clubs and more. Most everyone knows their names but it's rarely connected to thoughts of them being "evil billionaires".

I think Xerox is the definition of why vision and drive is so important you can strike Gold and not even realize you have gold, on a side note Xerox seemed to have some exceptional inventors working for them back then, wondered if those people remained employees or started things on their own like the guys on the SAP project

Having worked for SAP myself for over 5 years, all employees are extremely proud of the work they do, even though the pay scale at SAP is nothing compared to what FAANG pays. But because the impact that your work has around the world. Cos everyone uses it.

I'd legit be surprised if anyone ever worked in any office and never interacted with SAP. I don't think you can avoid it, they're just everywhere. Some Implement them nicely, some are so implemented so badly I'd rather they go back to _Oracle_, but there's a LOT of company using it and I legitimately doubt anyone, who have ever worked in any company and has to interact with another company, hasn't come in contact with it. They're just _that_ omnipresent.

This was a nice one for me - I know the story, BUT I did not know that most people do not even know what SAP is 😁👍 Great stuff

I attended a talk by a famous research professor at our company. He made an offhand comment “when SAP controls the world.“ That was thirty years ago. Now I know what he meant.
