Japan's Top Tuner Was Arrested

Smokey Nagata is one of the most infamous tuners to ever come out of Japan. Part of that is because of the insane cars he's built, and part of it is thanks to the ridiculously dangerous, very illegal top-speed runs that he's done over the years. One of which went down in history as one the craziest stunts on UK highways ever.

With the way tuning houses are these days, do you think there will ever be somebody like Smoky?

That neighbor who got him a job is the real hero of this story.

in 2017 the V12 Supra was sold at auction and smokey only got around 70, 000 for it after fees.
He used the money to help fund a white R35 GTR he was building at the time.
A lot of people asked him "Why did you sell such an iconic car for so cheap, isn't it worth 500, 000 to you?"
Most of the older Japanese generation disagree. These cars were built to be driven, used, abused, and loved. They weren't built to sit in a garage as a trophy.
I feel like this is something that western audiences will never fully understand.

He had the nickname "Smokey" prior to his visit to England, the nickname comes from the fact that he constantly has a burning cigarette in his hand, whether he's working on a car or racing a car he's always smoking. I know this for an absolute fact because I knew him as "smokey" before he ever went to England!

Unpaid overtime is normal in Japan, but helping another department, like Nagata on that second job, sounds very rare

Man I remember this guy. When I was in Elementary reading about him on import magazine and trying to download his videos online on Napster. This man is a legend

Stuff like this is so insane to me. Even in subjects I'm not into as far as being a devoted fan, just looking at people lay out their prized builds whether it be cars, general machines and robots, or sculptures and paintings. Insane seeing people getting to personal spots where they're like "Okay this is one of my greats" and sharing them for others to experience always gets me hype and interested. I don't understand the technical parts but I can instantly feel these builds are a marvel to look at. So cool and so good man

I love Smokey's Top Secret cars, particularly the GTR. His creativity as a designer is so underrated.

Smokey Nagata is probably half the reason I got into cars. I still remember when the 200mph street racing videos hit the internet.

Imagine being able to go back in time and pulling in the parking lot of Top Secret while Smokey was there.

I remember watching this on a JDM Option magazine DVD around 2007-8ish. Smokey Nagata is a legend! On that same disc, he had a G35 with a V-8 twin turbo (I believe it was an actual Skyline V-35 that we never got in the US) and it sounded amazing! They were revving it up and just loving it.

fun fact: the reason trust couldnt use their name and sold their products as greddy in the us is because theres a company called thrush that also makes exhaust parts. their names sounded very similar. thats why they had to sell them as greddy
