Around 9 or so hours ago Native Instruments released 1.1.0 of Traktor DJ for iPad. This has brought a new feature, external mixer mode, meaning you can output the audio from the app direct to your mixer of choice.

This is a video to show you how to do that.

Really liked this video. Going to look at setting this up with the Z2. Now all we need is some mapping support and this all gets very

Whoa, thanks for replying so quickly!

Hmm, yeah well you never know how lang these things are gonna take with Apple. But indeed, more and more developers are using the camera connection kit in new and creative ways, so Apple must react fast!

But it's nice to know that an iPad will last long enough to play all night long!

Thank you :)

Hi mate. You don't 'need' an audio interface per se, it all depends on how you want to use it. Without a soundcard you just have your 3.5mm audio output, so you can't send the audio to a set of speakers AND headphones cue at the same time, unless you buy a 'splitter cable'. However this splits a stereo signal into two mono signals.

Using an external soundcard allows you to send a master (to speakers, or through a mixer as shown here) as well as being able to use cueing headphones, stereo.

Of course. I'm getting confused with one of my other iPad videos and how I recorded the audio. I'll check it out tomorrow.

In this video example the Audio 10 soundcard is connected to my laptop, so yes, you can record from the soundcard itself through a 3rd party app that can use the device to record audio.

Cheef, do you know of any configurations that allow the use of the X1 or F1 with an Ipad? My preference would be to use the Ipad without having to touch it during a set.

Thanks! Very informative!

One question though; do you know something about external soundcards which power up your iPad as well? Will they come in the (near) future? Or do you think the iPad lasts long enough for say like a 4 - 5 hour set? How long can you mess around with Traktor DJ with your iPad mini?

Reading back; these are actually way more than just "one question" hahaha, but I hope you'll still answer them. Thanks again!

Some form of multi-device wireless midi clock sync would be cool. You could throw in iMaschine too.

No, probably a bad example by me there. I left the headphones in the soundcard after checking soundcard usage with external mixer mode OFF (cueing through Traktor DJ). When you have this mode ON, you cue as normal through the mixer.

First of all thanx for the reply, second - and what if I was to use the same connectivity concept, but with the popular Djay app?

Howdy cheef, I noticed you are using a xone DB4 for the external mixer. Why use an audio 10 sound card when the xone mixer has a built in sound card interface. Are xone db4/db2 sound cards class compliment with ipad or the app? Can all this be done without all the redundancy (cables/kits)The ipad works fine with my xone k2 as long as there is a powered hub. Nice set up BTW. P.S Check out hex editor program to enable time code scratch functions on db4/db2 without NI sound card .

Hi mate. I've just gotten the ipad and traktor dj. Haven't messed with it yet. Can you tell me why you need an external sound interface with your setup for? Pardon my ignorance. My setup is alot simpler and I'm trying to learn. Thanks!

Good spot - and it looks like NI fix this by the introduction of the Kontrol Z1 announced yesterday.

Thanx that's fantastic! A question please - considering my Reloop Digital Jockey Interface Edition 2 is essentially also a soundcard (I also have Focusrite Saffire Pro, but I rather leave it at home), do u reckon I can use the same setup here as well?
Meaning running the audio from my ipad mini, via the ipad-usb cable, through the Reloop unit? Hopefully I'll be able to use also the controllers on the Reloop (which are essentially midi commands) to control the Traktor/Djay apps functions. Cheers!

No, I was incorrect there. You can still record in the app when in external mixer mode

Hi, Nice video and very nice set up you have.

I have a question. How do you record your mixes when using external mixer mode? Since the iPad has no inputs i assume you would route your sound to another recording device (maybe a laptop?) Am i correct? and would you require a seperate soundcard for this?

Thanks

Hi man, thanks for the detailed info on this thing :)

I was wondering if you could make some tutorial about that metadata (cue points and such) that can be synced through dropbox ? I hope you know what I mean, I never got the chance to try that out.

Cheers :)
