Pushing the limit of Skyscraper Design: How tall can we go?

Skyscrapers are some of the most impressive feats of engineering in the world.

Skyscrapers are a testament to human ingenuity and creativity. But what are the limits of their height? Let's explore the factors that limit the height of skyscrapers, and we look at some of the tallest buildings that have tamed gravity.

The future possibilities for tall building design are endless. As technology continues to advance, we will likely see buildings that are even taller and more impressive than the ones that exist today. Some experts believe that we may one day see buildings a mile tall. Others believe that we may eventually reach a point where the physical limits of skyscraper height cannot be overcome.

Some of the tallest buildings
Jeddah Tower 1,008 meters (3,309 ft)
Burj Khalifa 828 meters (2,717 ft)
Taipei 101 509.2 meters (1,671 ft)

What we need is lifts that dont just move up and down on a pulley, but are attached to the side of the lift core and can move from side to side as well as up and down. If multiple lifts can share the same core and overtake each other, it would make a hige difference to the usable floor area of skyscrapers and totally change the economics.

Outrigger concept is very interesting.

Graet video, can you make a video about designing high rise buildings depending on codes or by using the performance based desgin, because its seems unclear, and if it possible to have an example for khalifa tower how it was designed, what is the design steps for it.
Thanks ❤️

hey Brendan, where did you get your structural engineering qualifications?

Hello sir….Aside getting a degree or masters degree in a university, where else can I get learn more about structural dynamics. Your recommendation will be greatly appreciated, Thank you

If the question is how tall can we go, then do we even know? We can make columns larger, we can taper buildings so the footprint at the bottom is larger, some locations have strong enough strata under the building so that larger foundations are feasible. Does the deflection limit become the maximum acceleration due to wind instead of strictly a function of height? Burj Khalifa has taken advantage of a lot of different things to push the limit by quite a bit, but could it be scaled up 50%? 100%. I think it could be scaled up by 100% and it would just be a matter of cost. Could it be scaled up 200%? I don't know the answer to that question.

Interesting subject, the height of buildings erected over the last two decades has exceeded what seemed physically possible.
