Sublimation and deposition of iodine crystals

The setup shows a beaker containing the iodine crystals being heated on the hotplate, with a florence flask filled with ice placed at the top. During the process the solid iodine changes its state of matter from solid to gas, without passing through a liquid phase. This is known as sublimation.
