While spin training is only required for Flight Instructors, spin awareness is necessary for all pilots. This includes an understanding of both spin avoidance and spin recovery. With the help of Rich Stowell and Spencer Suderman, we'll show you what's involved in this video.

I am a well season spin instructor in Indy with over 3000 spins and hundreds of CFI endorsements. This is one of the BEST explanations I’ve ever seen on spins. Exceptionally well done!

It's videos like this that will save lives. Pilots of course should know this, but me, someone who's only had 1 intro flight lesson, can take the reigns in the event a pilot gets incapacitated. Is that literally ever going to happen? No. Probably not. But it's comforting to know that even though I don't have practice, I do have the knowledge. More people onboard with flight knowledge has the potential to save lives!

Over 50 years ago I owned a Citabria and played around a lot with spins. Sometimes with pieces of wool taped along the trailing edge. I Agee with you. My understanding is the wing that drops first produces more drag than the higher wing that is still flying sort of. Opposite rudder increases airspeed over the lower wing producing lift and reduces airspeed of the higher wing causing the plane to level out. Simple, then you pull out of the dive. My record for continuous spins is 31 starting from controlled airspace. Illegal spins at night with only your landing light on causes lot of ufo reports, only did it once.

Excellent video, very clearly explained!
I fully agree on the benefit on learning to react to an incipient spin correctly, it is la bit like learning to ride a bicycle... there is a need to also experience it irl.

I have no plans on piloting an aircraft, but for some reason I feel the need to learn how to do emergency actions in the cockpit. I think it's just good to know. Like first aid.

On a side note, I always thought that you were supposed to do rudder opposite the spin and aileron... something? In the direction of the spin? Which seems unnatural, but spins were something that killed a lot of pilots during WWI and someone developed the technique that evolved into what is taught today. I read about it a LONG time ago, so I might be remembering wrong.

EDIT: I just looked it up and it might be related to biplanes or possibly certain military aircraft requiring some aileron action.

What surprises me is that elevator comes last in this checklist. Basically this is the most important control surface to get out of a spin as it reduces the AOA on the wings and gets your aircraft flying again.

Gonna try this next time the pilot passes out and I have direct access to the cockpit.
